Weird clumpy noise rendering, colours, not delivering close to the A900 accuity.

have you tried the updated version? It may have been a version that didn't have support for your camera

Bah :(

I've just had one last go at cleaning the mirror (and the screen above it) and nothing is shifting the specks of dirt. Unfortunately I got the camera from Argos and cameras are excluded from their 14 day return policy and they will have to send it back to Sony :( Might pop down there at some point today and see what they say.

I've got to laugh how these companies feel they can make up there own rules and expect the consumer to accept what is effectivly breaking trading standards laws.

If an item if faulty then your entitled to either a replacement or your money back. Your contract of sale is with the company the item was bought from and NOT the manufacturer. If they say it''s excluded from our returns policy or it has to goto the manufacturer for repair etc, they are simply trying it on and passing the hassles to someone else.

We had it with a mobile phone that went faulty last year. Quoting from the employees hand book was funny to listen to them insisting it has to go back the manufactures for repair etc. So pointing out that does there policy overule trading standards regulations, she says no. So ok give me another phone or the money back. Got a new phone.

Sorry, but this is 1 thing that really, really annoys me when these places take the uninformed public for idiotsto save undertaking there legal obligations.

Just glad that Argos (as in my case) were reasonable with your camera.

Not strictly true though. If a camera is faulty at the time of purchase then it should be replaced or refunded by the retailer, hence why they have the 14 day policy. If however the product develops a fault after a period of use, then the manufacturer's warranty comes into play. Sending the product directly to the manufacturer can be an advantage in that you will probably get it back quicker although you would have to stump up for the postage. That said, I have never come across a retailer who wouldn't sent it off to the manufacturer on your behalf.

Just to reiterate, the warranty doesn't entitle you to a refund or replacement unless the product cannot be repaired.

But the Sale of Goods Act does, under the assumption that the product wasn't fit for purpose in the first place.

Which is exactly my point. If the product is not fit for purpose in the first place, then that is when you are entitled to a refund or replacement. It is if it breaks down later that the manufacturer's warranty comes into play. If however the breakdown is due to the product not being fit for purpose in the first place then that is a different matter and then yes, I agree, the sale of goods act comes into play.

My point is that a lot of people seem to think that if a product fails whilst under warranty, then they are automatically entitled to refund or replacement, which is simply not the case.

If I have a product failure within six months and there's no sign of mishandling I shall politely ask for a replacement, thank you very much. To all intents and purposes it would be an automatic right, no?

If I reject the product within the first 2 - 4 weeks for being faulty, then I should expect the option of a refund, if I've lost faith in the product or seller.

I used to work for Argos many decades ago. Because they are a catalogue showroom and you dont get to see the goods, their 14 day moneyback guarantee means that they will return your money if you decide you dont want the item. Like most stores they are under no obligation to refund by law unless broken or unfit for purpose, but do so from goodwill just like other stores. They exclude certain items froom this guarantee due to either abuse or hygiene. Cameras are excluded as the potential for abuse is there, why rent a camera or lens when you can get one from argos for free and you can get your money back after taking 1000 actuations at the wedding at the weekend. Nobody would be keen to buy an electric razor or in-ear headphones if they thought they had been previously used too. The 14 day money back does not supercede statutory rights and they usually replace or repair electrical items within a year of purchase.

I was just reading from the link you posted, but in those circumstances where obviously the retailer can't prove the product was fit for purpose then yes, you should expect a refund or replacement but, as you have quoted a criteria ("No sign of mishandling") then no, it's not automatic.

I don't think a refund can be expected for a faulty item after the first month of ownership.

ok so if an item is returned within a year with no signs of misuse and they decide to replace it, what happens if the item is discontinued? Jessops discontinued the alpha a300 the day i bought it, what would happen if i returned it?

Wow, it seems as if I have caused a bit of a stirr with my Argos story

I've got another question if you guys don't mind... I'm looking to buy a telephoto with a decent reach, mainly for shooting aeroplanes, wildlife and a bit of macro. I've narrowed it down to two choices, a 2nd hand Beercan or a new Sigma 70-300 APO - the beercan looks really good but I'm not sure if it will have enough reach and apparently it's much sharper than the Sigma, is this true?

Cheers,

Craig

Same as above, not liking how much used Tamrons 70-300mm are going for (little over £20 cheaper than new).

So seriously looking at something like a used Minolta AF 75-300mm f4.5-5.6. Would prefer if it's macro but dont think so from the ones I've been looking at?.

So I picked up my A700 on thursday night. Initially I had a problem where my 24mm Sigma doesn't work propery on it so I have to take an angle grinder to it and now something very wierd is happening with the framing. It's bloody mile off. If I frame up a shot in the viewfinder of my laptop screen so that it fills the viewfinder, when I view the photo back the bottom 2" are missing and there's a extra 2" at the top, it's like the whole image has shifted up 2". Either there's a setting somewhere that I've cocked up of the sensor is badly mis-alinged.

Anyone have any ideas?

On the off chance I'd damaged the lens and an out of place element was causing the image shift I checked two others and had exactly the same problem. I can see this going back to Jessops tomorrow.

Well I guess it's a camera problem then? I got the camera as a re-furb with 12 months warranty for £450, £100 less than a brand new one. I suspect that because it's a refund I'm not entitled to a replacement poduct which means either a refund or waiting for a warranty repair. I'm not going to be happy waiting for a repair after 1 week of ownership (having had my KM5D repaired by Jessops I know how long it can take) so it looks like a refund, shame because I was starting to like the camera.

The cheapest place I cna find the body only is rgb-tech but they're showing out of stock at £519. Does anyone know any reputable shops who can do better than the Jessops & Jacobs at around £550?

Not yet thankfully. I need a needle file or a demel to open up the slot. No point doing it though until the A700 issue is sorted out.

I have however got another Sigma in pieces on my desk. Never take a lens apart before dinner because when you come back to it you'll have forgotten how it came apart.

Jessops at £550 seems the cheapest that will have stock at the moment.

Hello all

I would like to pick your knowledgeable brains if you don't mind?

I need an additional NPFM500H battery for my a700. Amazon appear to be cheapest for the official Sony battery at around £41. Are there any issues getting a cheaper generic? What do you guys use? Where did you buy it etc...

As the body cost me over 15 times more, it seems daft to try and do the battery on the cheap as I would be heart broken if it was to 'b****r the body', so to speak!

Any thoughts, experiences or horror stories very much appreciated.

:thankyou:
Simon.

hi simon

i've no experience of generic batteries,so can't offer any comments on them, although i'm not sure if the battery indicator(% charge left)will still work if that bothers you.

i got my spare battery from jessops when they had an offer on them for £25 a short while ago....might be worth checking them out.

Hi Stan, they are £65 on the Jessops site so I've missed a real bargain there :bang:

My issue / worry would be the battery leaking, exploding and knackering the body rather than the battery life indicator, which is something I perhaps wrongly assumed would work with any battery.

Cheers,
Simon.

as i said,i've no experience of the generic ones, but is it worth risking knackering your camera up for the sake of a few quid.£41 from amazon sounds quite reasonable....to pays your money....;)

Much as I liked my Sony A900, as I just couldn't find the CZ glass I wanted, I've let the A900 go (took a bit of a hit on that :()

So I've got a boxed and mint Tamron 17-35 and also a mint KM 50mm f/1.7 if anyone is interested. If so let me know and I'll chuck up an ad in the Classified.

Sorry to hear you leave the system, but I understand.

That is the issue with the Sony system, there is a lack of high quality secondhand glass around. The APS-C lenses are now plentiful, but FF G and CZ glass is still rare s'hand.

Yeah - I'm a bit gutted. If I could've got that 24-70 you PM'd about I'd be staying in tbh.

My main shooting lens is a Tamron 28-70 f/2.8 or Nikkor 28-70 f/2,8 and I just couldn't find one in Sony fit (had one ordered with Jessops for weeks)

Sods law a 24-70 will come up at a blinding price now. I'll keep an eye out in the future and if I secure the glass I need, I might well re-buy....

Having said that, I listed all my Sony fit lenses on Ebay late last night and they sold immediately.. so I think you are right.. not a lot of s/h glass and when good stuff comes up, it doesn't hang around!

Not sure why it is with Jessops, but they never seem to be able to get Sony fit lenses in a hurry. I know for a while, Jessops only sold Nikon and Canon fit lenses, and I've not really been in the shops since then.

The trick seems to be, finding a local shop (or resort to the internet) that either stock Sony fit lenses, or seem to be able to order stuff in within a reasonable timeframe. Funny enough, smaller companies seem to be able to do this quicker than the larger ones.

I must admit I do see the Tamron/Minolta 28-75s reasonably often (it's the same/similar lens), but the CZ2470s come up very rarely.

can i ask a question to fellow a300 owners?

i have dust on my screen and from another post i was suggested this "Possibly dust on the anti alias filter in front of the sensor, remove lens, lock up mirror (in your camera menu somewhere) then use the blower from the link in the last post and give it a good blow"

how would i lock up the mirror?

thanks

in the menu section, there is a cleaning mode.when you carry out this cleaning mode, the mirror will lock up automatically for you,so that you can clean the sensor.make sure you have a fully charged battery otherwise it may not work...reffer to the relevant section in the user manual

Jessops are useless.

My lens wouldnt zoom out so i returned it to Jessops after only 6 months of purchase and told me it would be sent to Sony and i could expect it back in 4 weeks.

Just short of 4 weeks i get text to say its ready for collection, excellent.
Arrive at shop for them to tell me that they don know anything about it????
call them a few days later for them to tell me that it has been sent to another store and they will get it to me with in a few days. Fair enough.
phone to check its in and they tell me the other store has never received it???? advise me!! to phone the repairs department at Jessops who then tell me it has been returned to another store.

Where is my lens??? who has it???

A day later Repair department phone me to say they have the lens with them and its ready to be returned.

I now have my lens but what a shambles.

Hmm.. Did you sell all you had? Is there any macro lens for Sony lying around maybe?:( I would take it from you if you have anything left...
