Evening chaps :)

I've just picked up a Sony a200 + 18-70mm - so far I'm really impressed with the camera, I was a bit worried the first time I heard the sensor cleaning noise but I scrolled back a couple of pages and noticed that's normal :p I have had a quick scout around the 'net and purchased a Minolta 35-105 to use as a walkabout lens and to use at a friends wedding in July, hopefully it will be fast enough for indoor shots :) I plan on getting a Minolta 50mm f1.7 at some point, but the prices on eBay seem pretty high at the moment - I'll keep an eye on the Classifieds forum here when I have enough posts too :)

Are the any other lenses that compliment the 35-105 nicely? I'd quite like a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 too, but it's a little out of my price range at the moment - maybe in a couple of months!

Craig

Edit: I know my Join Date is Oct 2006 and this is my first post. I'm a long time lurker :D Who do I need to ask to get my username changed slightly? It's not a change as such, I'd just like to be Kona rather than kOna!

A big thank you to Stan the Man for getting rid of my dust bunnies  and nice to meet a fellow forum member.

Just a quick question guys. I changed my lens for the first time today and straight away I have got black spots when looking through the viewfinder. The lens was off for less than 5 seconds and the lens I was putting on was free from dust, there is none on the sensor (took a shot at f22 with a white background to check) and I know dust in the VF isn't a problem but it's just annoying me considering I've only had the camera a couple of days! I've tried to use my rocket blower on the mirror and VF but it's not shifting! Any suggestions?

I changed the lens on my D40 & D200 in some pretty bad conditions and they didn't attract dust like this just has :(

have they been there from the beginning?i would be tempted to take it back to where you got it and see what they have to say.if the spots aren't visible on your shots, then it doesn't sound like dust on your sensor...but i stand to be corrected.

If the spots are not on your images then it sounds like something has gotten onto the mirror, in which case a quick go with a blower should sort it.

I had another look last night - the sensor AND mirror are free of dust! Is there a chance that the dust is inside the viewfinder box?

my sony a200 was quite bad for "attracting" dirt onto the viewfinder glass.
try giving that a clean and should help you.

Would be very unusual if it was. I can only suggest taking it back to the shop then.

Bah :(

I've just had one last go at cleaning the mirror (and the screen above it) and nothing is shifting the specks of dirt. Unfortunately I got the camera from Argos and cameras are excluded from their 14 day return policy and they will have to send it back to Sony :( Might pop down there at some point today and see what they say.

Anyway... here's a picture I managed to get through the viewfinder:

Their return policy doesn't over rule statotry rights ;)
Take it back if you think it's faulty

Took it back this morning and showed one of the girls behind the desk the problem - ten minutes later and I walked out the door with a new camera :) That was a lot less hassle than I thought it would be, top marks to Argos.

Thanks for the help guys - I'm going to head outside and take a few shots I think.

great result there kona....enjoy your new,new camera

big up to argos too...

Time for another question :)

What RAW converters/image editing software do you guys & gals use with your Alpha cameras? I've heard a rumour that ACR & Lightroom don't play nicely with Sony RAW files - is this true? I've always been a big fan of Lightroom, although I don't really have the cash to upgrade from v1 to v2 which supports the a200 so I've been using the supplied software (which broke my Vista x64 install, fixed now though) which doesn't seem all that flexible, I can't complain though - it's free!

Cheers!

Lightroom and ACR are dire for Sony A900 files.

Try those first - and then use something like Capture One.

See for yourself :)

I use ACR and don't have any issues with it.

That's encouraging to hear - I was looking to buy Photoshop Elements so I could use ACR with my a200 until I heard about the incompatibilities.

Do you know how it fares with the a200? I will give it a try myself at some point although it's slightly more expensive than PSE for the Standard version but if it's significantly better then I don't mind paying the extra.

Thanks for the replies :)

Sorry, I can only comment on the A900.

But as you can download trial of both, it should be easy for you to see with your own files.

Big thanks from me to PAS for sorting me out with the Sony software!

May my battle with raw data files continue.........
