Lol. Thanks for offering ***, i just get bored in work sometimes.

Some pics i took of my dog with that 70-210mm lens, not bad considering deep in the valley it was gettin dusk by the time i took them.

Minor fiddling on PS btw.

Well my Sigma 17-70 has arrived in the post today from the States, no customers duty which is nice so I've paid £140 for what seems to be an excellent copy of the lens, certainly cosmetically, sadly as I paid via Paypal its been delivered to my parents so I'll have to wait until the 21st to go and get it

I might just pop down on the bus its only an hour or so and I could squeeze in a day of togging in the Borders..... be nice to see my dad too he's a bit down after losing his job :(

Are play.com camers UK or imports? That price might just force my hand into buying a new camera.


Does anyone shoot tethered with an A700, how easy is it, does the software work properly or is it a clumsy and unpleasant experience? What's the A700 like for off camera flash stuff, does it reliably sync at 1/250?

Lastly what's the base ISO on it? Some specs say ISO200 others say ISO100.

Can't answer the first question, but I have used the A700 tethered and the software is spot on. You plug the camera in, the on screen controls pop up, you take the photo, the picture pops up on screen. Really smooth. :thumbs: I have also used it with off camera flash quite a lot and don't have any issues regarding syncing at 1/250th. I have also heard conflicting reports on native ISO but I tend to use 100 myself.
 
You could always order it & if it's non-UK/EU send it back under the DSR.
Quick way to tell apart from documentation is whether or not it's got a working grip switch (EU don't due to nickel content)

iirc the native sensitivity of the sensor is ~160-180.
You can shoot at 100 if you want though.

on another note apparently Sony staff price on Alphas have jumped so there may be a price rise in the offing.
 
Just a little hello from a new and very impressed A300 owner.
Hello
Next step for me is a zoom and was wondering what peoples thoughts and experiences were.
I have looked at the main contenders and keep getting lost off.
do I keep the kit lens and do 70-210 with the beercan or tokina(cant see me having much call for over 250)
or get a 18-250 and lose the kit lens
I am hoping to make the next leap in the next month or so,giving me a bit of time to weigh up the options
hopefully ill make the right choice with a few pointers

the downside to the 18-250mm is the relatively poor max aperture (it's where they compromised) - do you see yourself doing much photography in poor light or where you want to minimise depth of field?
 
mostly outdoors for me ,kit lens covers indoors as much as i need ,is the beercan really that good at F4 or will any 70-210 lens do the job ??

The Sony is clearly resolving a lot more detail, the writing on the boat is only readable on the A900.
 
I have birthday coming up!!
For all those with the A700, can you tell me what sort of ISO settings you can comfortably use without getting too much noise please?
Also is it very much better than the A300?

I'm pretty happy to go to 1600 and have been higher on a few occasions. Don't know the A300 so can't really compare.

Just make sure firmware is v4, this is significantly improved on previous versions.

My daughter uses a A300 and to be honest without peeping the IQ is not a lot different. The BIG difference is in the handling, really no comparison, A700 much much better.

Lightroom 2 and Capture 1

I'm still feeling my way around the A900 - and Sony raw files - already I'm addicted to the detail the A900 renders compared to my D700, although I've not quite cracked it colour-wise.

I find the Capture One does a much better job - both for details and colours.

C1 seems to render more real detail. Colours are matter of preference I guess.

Just went through Warehouse Express site adding up all of the stuff I've bought (or equivalents for old Minolta stuff or things not on the site like my Redsnapper Tripod & Bag) and it comes to over £3000, actually quite scary, I'v paid nothing like that!
 
Well the main big ticket items are things like the A700, Sigma 10-20, Sigma 17-70, Minolta 50mm (Used Sony F1.8 for pricing), Tamron 55-200, Minolta 28-105, Lee Filter Kit + ND Hard Grads.
After that its things like memory cards, bags and batteries that beef it up.

Although I've paid far less than half of that amount for everything which is quite satisfying!

This might seem a silly question to some, I have an a300 how do you use the camera as a light meter? I have recently bought Understanding Exposure and he offten refers to taking a meter reading with your camera.

When you look through the viewfinder and half press the shutter, you will see a meter at the bottom, something like this:

-2.....-1.....0.....1.....2

There will be a vertival mark above it and that will move according to the exposure. With the correct exposure, the mark should be above zero. Place the camerra in Manual and change the aperture, shutter speed and, if necessary, the ISO so that the mark is above zero (There are many combinations). That will then be your meter reading. You can then have a play to find out what shutter sped and aperture combinations work best for you in different light situations.

if you really want 1 (& I sold mine after it spent 10 years in the bag without being used) then it may be worth waiting until the new 50/1.8 DT hits the shops.
a) for APS-C users it may be better than the old f1.7
b) it may depress the price of the old 1.7 as demand will no longer outstrip supply

like heidfirst...i sold mine a few weeks back,as it just wasn't getting used.i prefer to use zoom lens'..but probably because i'm lazy,but i don't need an aperture that wide either,as i don't shoot in really low/bad lighting.
