Calling all Sony Alpha users! (Part 3)

Well my lens arrived today, so I thought it was a good idea to use the A900 - it look me about 10 minutes to work out how to turn it on :lol:

Anyhow, a few very quick tests shows the Tamron 17-35 is going to hold up very well (I use on already on my D700), the resolution / detail really is excellent.

Early days, but the A900 looks a very impressive beasty and its amazing to me how much camera you get for the money..

Hoping to give it a really good outing this weekend, although the weather looks awful for landscape type work (bad time of year...too bright and sunny and not enough nice clouds!)

Thats what I thought... I can't hear the dust mechanism on my Nikon's cameras... really caught me off-guard and the first time I turned it on, I thought I had workman outside with a pneumatic drill....!
 
Chris, I want my Tamron lens back!!:naughty: Seriously, please???!!!

I'm not getting on with my 18-200mm as well as I did with my 55-200mm that I sold Chris not so long back. Can't quite put my finger on it, but it's just not the same!!

I think I'm going to go back to a 55-200mm, and find myself a 17-50mm or 17-70mm!

never noticed that on my A700.

should have got the 18-250, it's better than the 18-200 ...
 
costing you more in the long run though.
sometimes it's better to bite the bullet & go straight for it. :)
 
Bought my A100 late last year off a friend (Member on here also)

Sony A100
18-70 kit lens
70-300 kit lens
Bag, spare battery, memory card.

Very happy with it, great starter camera.

Since then got a Minolta 50mm 1.7, Jessops 360AFD flash and a basic tripod.

Only started getting into it now, so will hopefully get some photos up soon :)

A rattle or more like a buzz?

just tried it..

turning on: a quick buzz, followed by a higher pitch ?lens engagement?
turn off: three short buzz

Does that sound right?

I believe these are related to the sensor cleaning (it's shaking the sensor) or SteadyShot. And remember, if you are tripod mounting, remember to turn OFF SS (otherwide the images will not be as sharp as they could be). I know this is pretty obvious, but I thought I'd mention it as it is very easy to forget about it.

Strange you haven't mentioned the sound of the shutter yet!

BTW, if you are impressed with the resolution of the Tam 17-35, I can see you liking the CZ 16-35 or 24-70!
I have the KM 17-35 (rebadged Minolta version), but after getting the CZ24-70 the 16-35 is on my shopping list ;)
 
Have just purchased a new A700 :). How do I check what version firmware it is?

Press Menu then Display - with camera switched on :nuts:

Chris; Tried your way as I couldn't remember how to do it and it wouldn't work until I did menu then display. I think the menu/display buttons simultaniously is when the firmeware version is upgraded in camera - and you press them before turning on the camera :thinking:

Fair enough, works on mine but it does only pop up for in instant.

Similar setup to myself. A200 with kit lens a 55-200 Tamron, 50mm 1.7 and 360AFD (got that yesterday). Now I have the flash I feel like I have enough equipment to really have lots of options to learn and play about. So I look forward to seeing what you come up with! :)
 
just got my a700 AND GRIP on fri, and had a weekend away at the motox with it:D

just wondering though.... how do you check what firmware is on it?:thinking:

Hi Pas...I got mine on Sunday. Press menu then display and it should show it.

nice one mate....i'm sure you're gonna love it....the A700 is so much more of a camera.my A350 doesn't get a look in these days!

Where about was the photo taken? I know it's puffin season, but I've never seen one so close :) Most people seem to use 600/4 for this kind of photography!
 
Hopefully going to pick up the 35-105 tonight, problem is the guy said it was the macro switch version (this one) but im not sure it is as i think he might have the newer version which doesnt have the macro switch, (this one)

Any thoughts between the two? Is the macro worth having?

It was on Skoma, wide angle and pretty close :)

You can get very close, they are not timed around humans.
 
What bags are you all using with your cameras? Been tempted with with that sony one in the bargain section.

I got a small Lowepro case for mine when i know im only gonna take one lens but would like something to hold everything i got and more when i buy more. lol.

hi mate,how much stuff do you envisage getting/taking with you on a shoot?

i have a lowepro minitrekker AW which will take a camera with lens attached,plus another 3-4 lens,filters system,flashgun,spare batteries and memory cards,remote etc...great bag,and comes with an all weather cover just in case it rains..it also has a tripod carrier.i also have a lowepro fastpack 250 which is a great bag,and works similar to a slingshot,but is more comfortable with two shoulder straps.it will carry camera and lens,2 other lens,flashgun,spare batteries,and memory...it also has a top compartment for food or waterproof clothing etc....and has a compartment for a laptop computer should you need it...

i'd recommend going to your local photography shop and looking at what they'll have that will suit your needs.

do you have a link to the sony one you've seen?it may or may not suit your needs depending on what you want to carry in it.fabs has a sony bag,and it's the biggest they produce i believe..but doesn't carry an awful lot of gear as he will tell you....:thumbs:
 
Indeed I have the Sony bag that was in Heidfist's thread and stan, I've found the other dividers now. ;)

Internally, it's an unusual one as the dividers form two levels so that you can store stuff underneath the camera so to speak. TBH, I could quite work out the best way of doing it myself so took some out and arranged it in a more conventional manner. Having said that, I don't tend to use it anymore as I prefer a rucksack style bag.
 
Has anyone noticed that changing the Zone setting under Custom Styles also changes exposure, by at least 1/3rd of a stop?

Probably old new to you guys, but I find my A900 underexposes - setting zone to -1 gives around 1/3rd stop less shutter, therefore a 1/3rd stop brighter exposure.

Hmmm, never looked at the zones settings, as I don't use the custom styles (always think that these are related to jpegs). In fact, I can't say that I've actually looked at the manual :shake:

But yes you are right, -1 does seem to increase the exposure by around 1/3 stop :)

Now to read the manual to find out what zones is supposed to be used for.
