Hi Guys,

just like to pick your brains re:- tripods.

Looking for a decent tripod to support an a700 and hopefully some big glass.

What I've got at the moment is far too flimsy, came with the point & shoot gear.

It looks as though they come with different heads, so is it better to buy a complete kit or mix & match and how do you tell what fits what...and what's so different about heads? :bang:

Anything that you can recommend, make, model etc?

Anyone got something suitable they would like to offload?

90 suggestions would be great, than if I reply to them all I can put an add in the Wanted section - bleedin' restrictions

Ken.

Hi Ken

Hmm tripods. A much discussed subject, but specifically for the A700 and big glass (Well I use an A700 + grip + Sigma 50-500) I use a Manfrotto 190XPROB with either a 488RC2 Ball Head or 804RC2 Pan & Tilt Head. The tripod is quite light but can take a hell of a lot of weight. The legs can also be opened out and the centre column tilts so you can get close to the ground if necessary. A whole lot of tripod for the money.

But that's just mine and I'm sure others will come along with their favourites.

Sorry, forgot to answer you question about the heads.

Ball heads are very good for tracking moving objects (Sports, birds etc) whereas Pan & Tilt heads are good for landscapes where you can do lots of fine tuning at your leisure.

Any decent tripod tends to be sold separately from heads, although sellers do package deals, which is how I bought mine.

Hope this answers some opf your queries. Happy hunting!

Hey Marc,

thanks for info.

Gives me something to go on, hadn't realised the difference between ball & pan/tilt, so looks as though the ball head might suit my needs better.

I'll have a browse through classifieds/fleabay see what's on offer and maybe even pop into Jessops, see if they've got something on display.

Haven't even been out to try new toy yet, got new lens coming tomorrow, so hopefully post a pic or two soon for comments.

Ken.

just recieved a 70-210 zoom off ebay, was told it would fit sony alphas, however when i pop it on to my camera nothing happens apart from "no lens attached, shutter locked".

Help!!!!

cheers!

just emailed the seller for more info so hopefully will hear soon

I have bought a couple of Minolta 7000's and then used the lenses on Alpha's. Do you know what the make of lens is ?

Thanks for the link mate but it is not any of those lens!!!!

oh well

To me it looks just like this one?

http://www.dyxum.com/lenses/detail.asp?IDLens=372

Its got the red APO red ring around it aswell.

This un-labeled Japanese-made auto focus zoom lens looks to be in excellent condition. Good clean rubber and barrels with no scratches, scrapes, dings or dents. Manual focus and zoom actions are smooth and trouble free, and auto focusing runs true to form.

But a japanese version perhaps?

it looks dead like that one, but it has nothing written on the grip.

What can I buy next
Im thinking Minolta 50mm costing about £80 now days or a grip about £130 I just dont know witch to waste my money on

If you are really wanting to "waste" your money, you need to decide which is more important. What would you use the 50mm for, do you feel your camera would be better with a grip?

I am starting to take quite a few shot in portrait so it would make life easier with the grip + make the camera a bit bigger to hold.

The 50mm Im thinking that for night club work but dont really know if it will do a better job then my kit lens.
Am I right in thinking that 50mm is the same as what our eyes see?

I think 50mm is what your eyes see on full frame but not with a cropped sensor, but don't quote me on that. ;)

Ah I see.

Just seen this on the Sony website.

Cashback available on the following models and accessories:

α200
α350
HVLF36AM Flash
HVLF42AM Flash
HVLF56AM Flash
VGB30AM vertical grip

Offer ends 31 January 2009

I was sure the offer ended on the 31st dec 2008??

In that case will go for the grip :D

I've just wasted some money on ebay, er £4 to be exact for a 77mm Cokin adaptor ring and filter holder. Need one for my 62mm thread on the 16-80 lens now, so I'll wait and see how good/bad this one is first once it arrives before spending another £4 lol.

To get the same field of view on an APS (1.5 crop) size sensor as that on a 35mm full frame sensor (or film) just divide the 35mm size by 1.5.

So 50mm on FF will be the same as 33.33mm on APS.

The nearest prime made is either a 30mm or 35mm lens. Of course with a zoom lens the exact equivalent could be set :)
