Normal AA rechargeables will do the job. TBH I stopped using them as they discharge between uses so they were always dead when I went to use the flashgun. The last set of normal duracells lasted over 250 shots so I just make sure I have one spare set with me and I'm set.

I don't know what the MD is either BTW, as I have the Sony f1.4

Hi everyone. I'm a brand new A200 owner, but have been lurking here for a while. MD refers to the mount - it's the one before the Alpha mount so won't work on the Sony without an adaptor, and won't have autofocus. You need to make sure it says AF. They usually point out in the description that it will fit on the Alpha too.

Cheers for the help guys, received my Manfrotto 680B monopod and QR head today:D cracking pod, just need the lens now............

Hi Guys,

Savings are going quite well. Where's the best place to buy a Sigma 24-70 F/2.8 EX DG? It'll be new of course and preferably UK sourced. Recommended by Stan - cheers fella!! - and have also read some good reviews.

Again, any help is most appreciated.

I use rechargeable AA's in my HVL-F56AM flash and the batteries last ages, and I mean ages before they need to be charged again. I had a particular wedding back in 2007 that was in the most gloomy weather and then a small dimly lit reception hall, I must have used the flash at least 400 times and the batteries stayed with me. They are the 2300mah power.

hi boobster...me and fabs got ours from microglobe in london, but i should warn you that they are grey imports...which basically means that you will only get a 1 year waranty instead of the sigmaUK 3yr extended warranty...this is because they get the lens from the USA,japan etc..,and not from sigmaUK.i'm very happy with mine, and looking forward to getting to grips with it

Hi guys. My mate is still umming and arring about the a350 vs the 450d. is there a link to somewhere that i can show him your amazing alpha (a200, a300, and a350) shots, so i can tell him that noise ISN'T a huge problem, and that he DOESN'T need to overspend on a 450d when an a300 will do more than enough!

Cheers!

Thanks Stan. Prefer getting an extended warranty to be honest. Jacobs look like a good bet. :)

Is that £90 for a new or second hand one? Not sure what the going price is at the moment, I have the 56flash and that is very good.

'Tis a decent flash.
Very basic, but does what it's supposed to do!!!

The only minor complaint from me is there's no test button, so you cannot fire the flash manually. It will only fire when you press the shutter button, which could be annoying later on when you want to experiment with slow shutter speed shots for example........

Having said that, the wireless mode makes up for everything. It's fantastic!!
(And the little stand for wireless mode has a tripod thread, which is GREAT news!!)

A great addition to any Alpha me thinks........

livewire...i have the 36 flash, and whilst it is a good flash,i think it will leave me short in the future.therefore,i'm willing to sell it for £70 incP+P.i've only used it to shoot my brothers wedding plus a few candid shots of my wife and grandchildren.......so been fired around 150 times.

and it's in as new condition

I dont know why but I thought for some reason this lens had a zoom :bonk:

Haha! i have so many pictures from work of 2 of those monkeys doing crude things! but this is a family forum! LoL!

Great to see you can get good pics from the minolta lens! Helping to guide my decision on which camera to get!

Couple of great photos there, it must be something about 'toggers, some of the first photos I took with my Minolta 50mm f1.7 was a Coke can...... The lighting is a bit harsh on the monkey, but you knew that anyway. Nothing that some off camera flash can't cure. Happy photoing.

The coke can just happend to be in front of me so I thought why not, I did take a picture of my foot whilst I was sitting there messing with the manual focus but didnt post that lol

Hi again guys! Still umming and arring about cameras. Just wondered a few things. Does anyone miss DOF preview or mirror lockup on the sony's? And is the supersteadyshot good enough for a 75-300mm lens at 300mm? I want to get that sony a300 and have a stab at taking some moon shots. But people keep telling me you NEED mirror lockup.

Also, i fancy doing some wildlife photography, hence the 300mm lens. Will the stabilisation in body be sufficient? Has anyone had a problem with the SSS not coping?

Its these concerns that are making me think i should go for a canon 450d. But the 75-300mm lens costs £200 on canon, opposed to £148 for the sony 75-300mm!

Cheers!

Hiya matey.
Not being big-headed here or nothing but..........

sept12-08.jpg

Taken with my a300 @ 500mm, and NO MIRROR LOCK UP!!!!!!!!!

The SSS is very effective, rest assured.
If you're shooting during daylight and have any kind of good light, then you'll not go wrong mate.
If the light isn't so good, crank the ISO up, and use some noise removal software to er, remove noise :bonk:

I for one have never even used a DOF preview. But I'm about as amateur as an amateur can get!!!!!

The only time SSS will not cope that well is with very slow shutter speeds in low light.

HTH.........

Bloody hell andy! Thats brill! Can't afford (read:missus won't let me) a 500mm lens! But its nice to see mirror lockup isn't something i need to be worried about!

Looks like 5 weeks til i get an a300/a350 then!

Thanks mate. Just trying to prove that lockup can't be that necessary......
I don't have my 500mm anymore. Although I do miss it allot. For the few times it actually got used it just wasn't worth having.
How often is there a full moon?
More's to the point, a full moon and clear sky??!!
And a full moon, clear sky and a free evening to shoot hundreds of shots, and then edit them, picking out the best ones!!!!!!

But nevertheless, still missed......
And they can actually be picked up pretty cheap. I got mine for £220.

Was it prime for £220? I keep looking at these zooming ones. Must be where i'm going wrong!

No it was the Sigma 170-500mm APO.
T'was nice, but I couldn't carry it around for too long due to it's size and weight!! A monster of a lens!!!!

THIS ONE

It's bigger than it looks, and with the hood on is just absurd

Actually, prime lenses are pretty much dearer than zooms.
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.......

I had a 300mm lens for my old Sony A100 and took some good shots of the moon, using SSS and a fast shutter speed kept the photos fairly good IMO. Mirror lock up will kick in for the 2 second or 10 second timer exposures though, well it does on my A100 and A700 anyway so I'm pretty sure it would on the 300 and 350 models.

That's a useful tip, that I never actually thought of. Cheers mate.

And 300mm is still capable of producing some great moonies.
Sorry - couldn't resist one more :bonk:

I was under the impression that the a2xx and a3xx don't have DOF preview? I couldn't see anything in the manuals i downloaded anyway? I'm more than happy to be corrected! I'm looking forward to adding yet another sony item to my house!

yeah they got rid of mirror lockup and DOF preview to save money i think. Seems odd, seeing as the A100 had it? And the A700 still does? Perhaps sony's way of "selling up the range". Still, i've not spoken to anyone that uses MLU, and only a handful that use DOF preview! So don't think i'll be missing anything!

The a350 and a300 do not have a DOF preview, one explaination that I read said it was because they have the live view so I'm not sure what the reason would be for the a200 not having it. Anyway, personally I don't miss it not having it as I never used it on my a100

But people keep telling me you NEED mirror lockup.

Thats something I have never heard. In all the advice I have been given and all the tutorials and articals that I have read, never once have I been told that having a mirror lock up feature was essential. Well not for the taking of pictures at least, for cleaning the sensor maybe. Am I missing something here?

I think I must be as well. I don't know of any reason for MLU other than sensor cleaning. Do the new Alphas not even have that?

It does have it for the purpose of cleaning. It's in the menu system somewhere and will only activate if your battery is more than either half or three quarters full.

Can't see why you'd need the feature for picture taking as the mirror has to flip up anyway whilst the shutter is open for the sensor to record the image.

the A200,300 and 350 do not have mirror lock up.i believe it's something to do with the live view arrangement inside the camera, plus sony say it's not necessary with live view.the reason why people keep going on about using the mirror lock up facility is that it reduces the chance of camera shake whilst taking an image, but i for one cannot see any difference between 2 images i've shot...from my A100(with MLU)and my A350(without MLU).

as regards to DOFP,i never used mine,or could understand how it worked :bonk:
