Hi all

Sorry I am turning into a hit-and-runner here lately but I need some urgent advice from all knowledgeable in cars.

A mate of mine recently lost his car in an accident, everyone OK but his car was written off.

He can now buy 2 accident damaged Mazda 6s. The one is a 2003 5 speed mtx and the other is a 2006 6 speed mtx, both 2.0l petrol.

He would like to know if the 2006 engine will work in the 2003 car...

Any takers?

possibly. Can he check the engine numbers to make sure that they are the same engine? just because they are both 2.0 doesnt mean that they are the same.


but be prepared to swap ecu's etc as well. I would also take the g/box and all ancillaries.

I doubt that it is cost effective (because of time/space/effort and risk) unless they are very cheap.

remember that he will also need a vosa inspection if they are insurance write offs.

remember that other bits could be faulty as well as the engine

Thanks for the input, he will be buying both complete cars but essentially wants to put the 2006 6 speed engine + g/b in the 2003 car.

I didn't get all the detail but it would seem that the 2006 6 speed engine has practically no damage (car rolled/overturned) whereas the 2003 car has a good chassis but the engine seems to be shot.

Is there a site somewhere where the engine numbers can be checked for compatibility or do you need to consult someone with more specialized knowledge?

Sounds to be more trouble than its worth. But have you/your mate tried posting on a Mazda forum?

The guy can get two damaged cars for a really good price...

A mazda 6 here (new) will go for more than twice my gross annual income, 2nd hand maybe 1.5-1.75 times that...

Also, we have had some draconian credit regulatory legislation enacted down here which REALLY makes it difficult to finance anything lately:bonk::thumbs:
 
In a word, yes. You will need to ensure that you swap all of the engine loom but apart from that it is a direct replacement.
 
as long as the base engine and box are the same type, which I would assume to be the mazda inline 4 that we also use in mondeo and focus, it'll go together ok. Anything that's modified to meet the later build spec should be able to be swapped with the old components.
