Following the demise of my 18-70mm lens I am now in the market for a new bit of fast glass, pretty quickly as well as I have a wedding next weekend.

I've narrowed down my choices to the following:

Nikon 17-35mm f2.8
Nikon 17-55mm f2.8
Nikon 28-70mm ff2.8 (this is the preferred choice due to the focal length)

I've had a look at the Sigma variants but have not been impressed with the build quality of what I have seen. My current line up is Sigma 10-20mm, Nikon 50mm f1.4 and Nikon 70-200mm AF-S. Nikon glass would be the preferred option but I am open to suggestions.

Discuss. :D

The 17-55mm is rumoured to work much better with digital. I have heard of problems (although I dont know how true) of problems with the 17-35 with a digital sensor.

The 17-55 is newer, has a longer focal length, and is a DX lens so is probably lighter.

The 28-70 is a great lens as long as the focal length suits you! Its bloody heavy though!

I've got the 17-55. As far as I can determine it was designed as a professional photo-journalism type of lens. Focusses close. Sharp right from f2.8, at least in the centre, wicked-sharp from say f4-8 across the frame, and very ruggedly built.

You cannot use this lens, especially with the enormous but excellent hood, in public inconspicuously, you get asked if you're from the local paper and stuff, and I've taken to using an old 35/2 when I'm going someplace where that might be a problem. This would be true of the other two though as well.

The 17-35 is a bit softer wide open from what I've seen and it seems to be more of a landscape lens, to be used stopped down where it's outstanding.

Don't have any strong view on the 28-70, having never touched one, but my impression is that it's a pretty good lens for people/portrait photography etc.

Well if I was in your situation, with the glass you already have; for my type of photography it would be the 28-70 f2.8

tamron 17-50 could be an option - it's had fantastic reviews and comes in much, much cheaper than the nikons. I've just ordered one so will let you know what I think of it in time. The nikkor 17-55 is a very nice piece of glass, really is built like a tank, on the flip side the weight could be an issue if you're using it for extended periods.

Love my 17-55 and wouldnt trade it for anything. Very worthwhile investment

Any joy with your tamron jhob? Should be getting mine tomorrow.

Another 17-55mm user here. It ROCKS! :)

db247 - still waiting for the tammy 17-50... and the D200 that I ordered with it. Warehouse express have been slow in approving my interest free credit application and then sending out the forms for me to sign. It's been a frustrating wait and I'm not hopeful of having it by the weekend either. GRRRRR!

Let me know how you get on with yours.

IQ issues aside (there are bad 17-55's out there, my mate has one)

I'd go for the 24-70, it leaves only a 4mm gap in your focal length range and will undoubtably be better for event covwerage type stuff where you dont need the wide end so much.

just my tuppence ;)

My old man uses the Nikon 28-70mm f/2.8 on his D70, but I went with the Tamron 28-70mm f/2.8 for my D80....

It's lighter, much cheaper, and just as sharp (in my 'umble opinion!). It is 99.9% of the lens for 1/3rd of the price....

I thought it was going to be "Calling all Nikon users.............change to Canon" !!! :D
