Hi all i am having some problems with a battery grip.

The one in question is the Ansmann grip N80 PRO. I have now had a second one sent to me as i could'nt get the first one to power my camera which is the D90.

I am looking to see if any other user has one of these grips and if so does it work ok or is there a camera setting i need to change to get it working.

I have been assured that it does work on the Nikon D90 from the supplier.

Thanks all.

i have an ebay battery grip for my D80 and it keeps failing unless i push it in the right place, so i think that might be going back to hong kong.

i bought the original grip from nikon had no problems

i have the hn-d80 from hannel and its spot on for £100 with a free battery, but the front dail doesn't work at all but the rear dail shutter button and af/ae lock button are all fine.

I recall there being a reference to the battery grip on the D90 settings, but don't have my camera to hand. The D90 manual page 184, you have to set for type of battery you may be using in the grip. Admittedly this refers to the Nikon grip but maybe settings will affect the grip you have tried. It's probably due to the different battery voltages is my guess.

I have the MB-D80 grip on my D90 and have no problems, touch wood :)

GlasgowGunner...

I have the same/similar problem...

I`ve not long ago got myself a D90 (and some other goodies :D ) along with the MB-D80 grip (all brand new btw) and it won`t work when I tighten it up.

When the grip is left "loose" it works and registers/acknowledges the camera but when tightened all I get is an empty battery symbol and nothing works!

Have emailed the place I got it from but had no reply yet...

I`ve also read about others having this problem and one guy seemed to think it was a connector problem inside the D90... I`m NOT suggesting you do this (I haven`t) but he moved one of the connectors inside the D90, in the battery chamber, and then when tightened, the grip worked...

I`m just going to send the one I have back and hope the replacement works ok.

Let us know what how you get on. :)

I have been checking on google and something called dead battery syndrome keeps popping up could it be this?

This is a prime example why you shouldn't buy aftermarket grips :shake:

Is the battery indicator flashing as if the battery was dead?

I had a similar issue, bought an aftermarket grip for my D90 and it didn't work.

As it turned out, the grip was fine (and is great!), the issue is that there are two variants of the same EN-EL3e battery. I picked up two official ones on Amazon Marketplace and all was well, works perfectly.

Even though my aftermarket batteries have exactly the same designation, they simply will not work in a D90. Easiest way to check is to pop the official battery supplied with the camera into the grip and see if it works.

I did read a thread somewhere about the battery terminal problem as someone said. I have a d80 and d200 both with nikon grips and have never had a problem. Sorry should have said the DBS with vr lenses meant that the camera battery meter would show empty battery after a couple if shots, take the battery out and reinstall battery and it would show full battery again

From what I've read it's not actually the batteries that are at fault, although they appear incompatible with the camera, it's actually the camera that is deliberately incompatible with the batteries.

Nikon engineer their cameras so that they don't work with aftermarket batteries, but the battery manufacturers always get around it after a short while - the original aftermarket EN-EL3e batteries that worked fine in a D80 or D200 wouldn't work in a D300 when it was first launched and now the ones that work in a D300 don't work in a D90.

So should i return it and get the Nikon one and get the Nikon battery to match i think im waisting my time with this.

Can anybody give me a cheap place to purchase one im thinking ebay...

Don't buy "genuine" Nikon batteries on Ebay - most are HK fakes in counterfeit Nikon packaging...

Try looking for a second hand one or get in touch with kerso on here, he did a great deal on mine for my d80 with battery. Iirc it was about £120. Top bloke to deal with.

I have found one on ebay for £110 plus postage think i might go for that and return this one then as the 3rd party item cost me £100 so not much in it.

Do you's think it could be the camera????

Nope...I'd put money on it being the battery grip. You should be able to get a mint MB-D80 grip for £60 or less nowadays I'd have thought...

Ahhh......if you get a real one you could run the D90 on six AA rechargeable batteries, so two sets = £12, which is a lot better than £50 a go for a genuine EN-EL3e ;)

Are they not liable to run down a lot faster than the EN-EL3e?

Could you maybe give me a brand that will hold upto this power demand?

the mb-d80 isn't an after market grip and thats still not all that good from what ive read on the net, in fact it seems to be worse in most cases.

The op is not using a nikon grip, he us using a third party one. I can also recomend t4 cameras, I brought a f
D200 from them at an excellent price a couple of months back, realy nice people and good customer service.

I found this just wondering if the 3rd party grips have this problem a lot worse than the Nikon grip. Does anybody know what the centre contact does? it is marked 'S' on my battery.

That`s the thread I was talking about...

Ok... I got a Nikon MB-D80 grip and I still have this problem. I`ve tried it with the genuine Nikon battery I got with the D90 and it`s still the same.

It does seem to be a similar problem to the guy in the thread you linked to GlasgowGunner... for me anyway.

Seems to "connect" fine when left loose but as soon it`s tightened up...

NOTHING!

Now I`m wondering if I send it back and it`s a "common" problem then the replacement might be exactly the same...

Don`t really know what to do but I reckon the first step is to contact the shop and see what they say...

Btw... what`s an "aftermarket" grip then? :D

An update here i have now ordered the MB-D80 Nikon grip in the hope it will be ok if not it's back to jessops for me as this is not to handy.

I did do a search on flickr and it seems a lot of folk are using the Nikon grip on the D90 so here's hoping.
