hey,
so right... ive been looking for a nikon body to convert for infrared use, (removing the filter inside the camera), recently ive been offered a second hand d1x, with 4 spare batteries, for 210 pounds, ive looked around, and considering its in good condition, this seems to be a great deal...

however...

for that price, i can get a much newer camera, so my question is, would a pro body from many years ago, rival or be better than a amature body today?

any thoughts on this matter will be much apreciated,

HISTORICAL WARNING:

This page was written back in 2001 when the D1X and D1H were hot stuff.

As of 2007, I wouldn't bother with either of these old boat anchors.

As we learned back in 2002, the obsolete Ni-MH batteries they used were heavy, difficult to charge reliably, gave only about 250 shots per charge, and died very early.

Not only did most of us need to haul three batteries with us at all times, but they were so big and weird shaped that they couldn't fit in our pockets. After the few shots the cameras would read LOW and disable some of the finder indications. The batteries sucked, but it was the best we knew back then. I was happy to throw away my D1H when I got my Nikon D70 in 2004, and my Nikon D40 today is even better than my D70.

In 2007 the Nikon D40 has the same image quality as the D1X (with less ruggedness but five times the battery life) and my Nikon D200 outperforms the D1X and D1H in every possible way.
 
But at that price it is hard to beat, especially considering that it comes with 4 spare battries (though you have to wonder why it needs 4 spare batteries). And if it is only a specialty camera (only used for infrared), then the price may be right.

Though there is the Fuji S2 pro to consider. How much does one of those go for?
 
magnum, thanks for imput, i have read that article, and at first it did really put me off, but browsing around the internet, found people saying, how the d1x is still a great camera..., others like that saying its old and out of date...so now im stuck... should i spend 210 pounds on a pro body, thats out of date, or for a similar price, a d40, 70 or 100? (all be it, the 100 is just as out of date),

does the fact that there old really matter?

any imput, is great

It will still take the pics, but its not convinent. Its huge and heavy and uses a lot of battery.
You're best off buying a D40 or D50. I saw a D50 go on ebay for about £150. I havnt seen a D40 body go on its own.
I think that £210 is a lot to pay for something thats worse than a £150 D50. I think with the D1x youre paying for the name of it, being one of the first Nikon DLSR's.
The newer Nikons will be a lot lighter and easier to use, and much more reliable.

No bids on the D70... with a grip. I would take a good look at that auction!
 
I have a d1x, a d2h and a d2xs
The d1x does use a lot of battery power and sometimes i can only get about 100-150 shots out of it before i need to chnage the battery.
The quality of the image is far better than the d2h but thats no surprise.
The viewfunder is quite small compared to the d2h/d2xs and so it the rear screen thing (techincal eh, i just cant remember what its called)

i dont know how good any of the d40/d50 cameras are as i have never used one, but i personally would buy a d1x for £200. you do get build quaility and i like a nice heavy camera in my hnad (old school)
 
If the batteries are 6+ years old i wouldn't expect them to have much life left in them, price up new batteries before you commit

Would you even be able to get batteries in that size anymore?
