Calling all Canon 450d Users!!

Nope, f2.8/4 but it still takes amazing shots - loads sharper than the kit lens and because you can open it up a lot more it doesn't seem to suffer from a lack of IS.

Aye, this thread needs more pics in general! Start posting some of your first pics people!

Ok, here's a few of my first shots with the 450d, when I was playing with it...

These were taken in June.

I agree about seeing pics for the 17-70, I've been thinking of investing in one to replace the kit lens, which I've noticed now, I know what to look for is pretty bad for barrel distortion

I still hanv't received anything from Canon regarding cashback, and i sent my form off quite a few weeks ago. Anyone have a number or email address i can ring to find out about the status of my cashback?

Waiting for my cashback cheque too. WAS going to spend it on a nifty fifty, but i think thats been ruled out due to cashflow! Still, my bday in march, so i'll get the missus to buy it for me!

Moving to a new flat in manchester on thursday. I can't wait to take pictures of it! its such an interesting building!

LoL! I would've gone for the A300. But when the 450d was only £20 more, i couldn't resist! Still, a350, great camera snapper!

Hello everybody. New member here, new to photography and new to my 3 days old brand new Canon EOS 450D - love it  Only with kit lens so far, but that should be enough to learn some basics. If only I had more time to go out and take some pictures. Got to wait 'till weekend, can't wait

Good set of images Edz. I agree with #1 and #4. In #3 you've got a decent shot of part of the constellation Perseus centred just to the left of Alpha Perseii (the brightest star in Perseus, called Mirfak, about halfway from centre to the right of the frame with the reversed C of stars on it's right). It looks like you used a FL a little too long for the exposure time as the stars are visibly trailing even at that small size.

Thanks for the kind comments guys, appreciated :)

 wow.. you certainly know your stars!! I pointed to a random part of the sky! I brought up the contellation in wikipedia, I couldn't match it up to the pic! lol!!

What does FL mean??

Trixster - I love the Elise!

FL = Focal Length, on a static tripod, you have to keep the exposure time down and it's related to the focal length at which you are shooting to avoid traililng. I spent many a night with Binoculars looking at the Mirfak association, and have imaged that region myself with my motorised scope and 450d (only a bit closer in). You've got in a little close to be able to see the full constellation, equally it's tricky to see the constellations in astro images due to the number of stars that the camera can pull in compared to what you can see.

Just got home from work and it's finally arrived........

It's hell waiting for the battery to fully charge for the first time 2 hours seems like a life time..

Still got no idea what I'm doing once it's charged but the learing curve should be fun.

I guess you 'll try some pic at home first

I didnt know what to take initially, but I took pics of clock, wall painting, etc

Enjoy!

LoL yep took many many pics of the Grandson lastnight before he was wisked away, so had to keep myself happy taking things of the shelves to photo them wife ain't to happy.

I've been very lucky and have picked up a load of new gear  last week,
got 2 new lenses a sigma 24-70 f2.8(constant) and a canon 55-250 IS, also got an off camera flash cable to play with

going to be a busy boy....though i'm away on an oil rig for a week at the mo, bought my camera and one lens.....nifty fifty alert!!:woot:

I shot about 500 pictures already with my 450 and hate them all  They are all RUBBISH - blurred (camera shake), dull, flat, out of focus and boring. Of course it is not camera's fault, but only mine. This is alot harder than it looks. Going to pick up few books about photography this weekend and hopefully learn something :bonk::cuckoo:

EDIT: I should mention I only use M(anual) mode, as I want to learn as much as I can and want to decide how the picture should look instead of letting my camera to do so... maybe I just should be using one of the automatic modes instead

rebel, I started out by fixing the ISO and using Av mode, I found that if I didn't fix the ISO it was hard to get a grip on what effect the changes to aperture had. I'm still learning, especially different metering modes.
Lots of people reccomend the book "understanding exposure", I'm still reading it but its making sense so far.

My biggest mistake (at the moment) is not having enough depth of field, like this:

(click for bigger versions)

I think we need more pics in this thread !

Craft, always worth using the DOF Preview button on the left lower quadrant (From the rear) of the lens mount. This will stop the lens down to the aperture setting you have set and give you an idea of what the image will look like. Obviously the view will darken too making it harder to see but... It can be handy.

I started out in P mode, gives you some control but the camera makes it easier for you, and then having read understanding exposure moved to manual, then as I couldn't adjust the camera fast enough for things I was trying to shoot (changing light conditions etc), I started using Av, and generally now leave it there.

lol..same here, but it's the old adage of practice makes perfect.

Understanding Exposure is a very good book to get, I've only read several pages but it is very insightful :)

I've been reading this:
http://books.google.com/books?id=Wp...=3&ei=5TlrSfGbD5b0ygTL8ZT7Ag&rview=1#PPA13,M1

Love the fact Google has these books available to preview!

How do you use the DOF preview button? Nothing happens when I press it? Tried to press and hold too, but still nothing??

You can normally see the blurred background through the view finder though? So if the button that necessary?
The lens remains wide open until you press the shutter, so with the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 you are always looking at f/3.5-5.6 (depending on focal length) Stop it down to f/8, then press the button, and the aperture closes to f/8 and there is a noticable difference.

The thing i always notice is when looking through a lens my eye gives a larger DOF than the camera sees when i press the button so it's difficult to judge what the results will be.

Edz, if you press the DOF preview button and the view doesn't change, you are set to use the lens wide open or very near. As Blue Eagle says stop down the aperture (bigger number) and try the preview button.

Yeah I do use the preview button sometimes, I find that its not that useful with the kit lens, especially in low light but is much more useful with the nifty fifty.

Another thing I've been doing lately is using different colour presets, I know you can do this afterwards in pp, but theres no harm in having a play.

I've not used the presets... but I'm shooting in RAW, so I think that will only change the display for preview

Thanks for advice. 'Understanding exposure' is first thing on my list 'to buy' this weekend and also will go out again and try some different subjects and settings. I know I have to be patient and keep practising, but it is hard sometimes when you see beautiful pictures on this forum and then you look on your own ****. So less talking, more learning - for me. ;)

Cheers

Ok please be gentle, first time with the 450D out and about in a very damp and cloudy Swansea Bay. C&C more than welcome. Thanks

I use to have the 350D (before a House robbery) and can notice the difference... only really taken photos of my Dogs, but i do love it.

New member with 450d, got kit lens but looking to purchase Sigma 70-300APO.
Went to my first camera workshop this weekend and loved it.

battery grip
just recieved a photix battery grip from ebay, very impressed with it, can recommend it for those of us with big hands, and who use portrait quite a bit
makes the camera look even more awesome too:naughty: especially with the 24-70 f2.8 on

Just a heads up for EOS450d users, especially macro junkies.
I was having trouble gettting the white balance correct for a macro shot of an Iris last night. The purple was coming out blue due to the tungston lights and all the differing white balances could not get it correct, even custom.
I found that my camera has a colour balance shift facility, it was very useful for getting the correct colour and only takes a few seconds. Motto is......read the manual
