Call blockers

It seems we are on many lists. The phone line used to belong to an elderly couple so we get a lot of "Microsoft" calls. Latest is a whole series of "surveys" (which are exempt from TPS....)

It's fun playing with them but it wastes over an hour a day.

There are 1,000 spare slots on the CPR blocker :)

may be exempt from TPS but then there's data protection to consider - tell them to either remove your record, or flag it as not to be contacted in future

This is a nice alternative to blocking calls

He was being interviewed about this on Radio Wales this morning. A very good idea (if you can bothered talking to them).

They don't give a monkeys about that, it's like the Wild West. They'll either hang up or make the right noises and then hang up but the calls won't stop.

so go to the information commissioner (http://www.ico.org.uk/)

I have reported many to the ICO where possible, the trouble is many either don't give a (real) company name and/or their number isn't available. Also, many are from overseas so doubt the ICO can do much.

You'd think "the system" would be simple and there'd be a straight forward way to deal with it wouldn't you? Trust me, there isn't!

Like I said, it's like the Wild West (yee haa!) :).

Edit: on a more positive note, things do appear to be changing. Just spotted this recent article:

Good news!

Interestingly, for all the people saying the TPS works, the TPS website specifically says they can do nothing to prevent scam or silent calls.

The remit of TPS lies strictly within the boundaries of live unsolicited calls of a sales/marketing nature. It does not stop other call types such as recorded/automated messages, silent calls, market research, overseas companies, debt collection, scam calls, nuisance and abusive calls etc.

http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/contactfaq.php

I.e. it only stops responsible companies calling you. Other calls may be illegal but best of luck getting the police interested.

In other news, my blocker will be here soon. Obviously there have been no calls today.....

Lol, ninja skills

Ex-directory for 30 years and on TPS, I get maybe one call a year if I'm unlucky.

If your getting loads of calls then your just not being abusive enough, you have to get on the swear and screamer list :D

Or another victim who fought back

In other news, there was a bloke on Today this morning defending the actions of cold callers (he's president of the harass you in your own home society or something). He was clear that if you had ever ticked a box on any form anywhere allowing "trusted 3rd parties to contact you with offers" then you deserved all you got. ....

That's all well and good but some websites (mainly insurance ) don't allow you to continue unless you provide a contact number and agree to their terms and conditions one of which will be hidden in the bowels of jargon allowing third parties to contact you. Personally I'm considering getting rid of my land line as the only people who call it these days are cold callers.

I usually put a garbage number on those forms, the computer requires a number but most of the time it doesn't have the ability to check its valid.

Yip, and use a throwaway webmail address if they insist on one.

I listened to this guy being interviewd on the Jeremy vine show the other day, it was quite interesting, he actually keeps them talking on the phone himself, and at the end of the interview vine asked him if he had been talking via his 0871 number and he said yes, he got the BBC to call him on that line, vine ******ed himself laughing

Cold calls were being discussed on the radio yesterday and a recording of how a guy in the USA handled them was broadcast.
It went along the lines of " I am a police officer at the scene of a serious crime. Because you have telephoned here I require your name and address and thereafter you must present yourself here for interview".
