Hi all,

I use spyder 4 express on my screens. My laptop kept saying it needed calibrating so I did it but it doesn't look as it did before??
Is there a certain time of day when it works best? It wasn't in direct light but it was a bright day, would that make a difference? X

I would be surprised if a screen did look the same after calibration. It will appear to be normal after a few days once your eyes become accustomed to the new settings.

As long as you followed the instructions, all should be well.

Thanks, it's not the first time I've calibrated my screen. Just doesn't look the same as before, just a little worried about my work looking off now.

No. Just make sure you have no bright lights shining on the screen and you are at a light level at which the screen brightness is not unpleasant to your eyes.

Oh and ensure your screen has been on for at least half an hour.

Check that the operating system hasn't reverted to the original profile and not the new one you have produced. I vaguely remember that vista used to do something like that. I'm sure someone will come along and clear that up

When I create a profile I edit the name to reflect the date and also which monitor as I use a dual monitor setup

For Win 7 and 8:

Right click on the desktop,
select screen resolution,
then click advanced settings
click color management tab
click color management
check if the profile created by your Spyder is set to the default used by your monitor. If not, set it, and remove any others.

Other things to check:

Your're profiling in subdued light.

Your calibration software is not generating a version 4 ICC profile (always use V2 for windows machine).

Your colorimeter's sensor is clean and free of dust.

Thank you, I am so stressed!! I am still getting a bad colour cast. Not sure what else to do, I have windows 8 & I am really struggling to find settings! Haven't had windows 8 long so sorry for sounding thick x

Check if there is anything on your laptop making automatic adjustments for ambient light. If there is, disable it, or just nuke it from orbit entirely... crap like that makes life hell in a colour managed workflow.

Check nothing had made any changes to the video card output in your video card driver software.

Other than that, I can't imagine why it should have suddenly started misbehaving.

as a last resort

  • Strip all profiles away using the method I posted earlier... remove them all.
  • Uninstall the spyder software.
  • reboot.
  • re-install it.
  • Try again

Not sure what else to suggest without actually being there to nosy around your system.

You wouldn't have multiple video cards would you? I know some programs will auto choose between them and the default IC set may not be the same for them. Have you made any changes to the default calibration settings? Things like black point/white point set ("relative" etc) can make a significant difference in the results the program gives.

He has a laptop, so multiple GPUs is highly unlikely.

Chaz, as long as you have followed the instructions for the Spyder 4 you will be fine. You can check to see if the screen is displaying the calibrated edition by "right clicking" on the Spyder icon in your system tray. It will say "calibration on or calibration off".

After Windows has booted and if you wait a few seconds, you will briefly see a box and text stating that your monitor profile has loaded to your graphics card. If there is a problem there will be another text box that requires you to click "ok" to remove.

Normally you will be required to recheck the calibration every 2 weeks but this can be altered in settings, I have mine set to monthly with a full recalibration every 6 months.

Other than this I cannot think of anything else that can help you.

I have a Spyder 4 Express. It worked well for the first few months. After returning from a holiday I re-calibrated my monitor and got a horrendous green cast. After several more unsuccessful attempts with the same results I found this reference :-

I stuck the Spyder on one of the central heating radiators overnight !! Next day it was working properly again. I'm not recommending this course of action and I don't know if that's what made the difference, I'm just reporting my experience. :-)
