Hi all
I've got my first 'Cake Smash' photo shoot next weekend was just wondering if anyone has any tips or ideas that have worked for you

Don't use chocolate cake. It will look like the kid is covered in poo.

I have to be really honest here and say that I'm not a fan of cake smash. I can't understand why anyone would want a shot of a child covered in... mess. Shots of this nature actually make stomach churn.

I have a similar reaction to naked babies :lol: though my aversion could simply be an aversion to children in general
 
I honestly can't stand it when I see other local pros offering a cake smash. It just sounds awful, and very American. But each to their own I guess!

Have to agree with you there, the missus showed me a photo of our great granddaughter who was covered in cake, yuk I thought. Why would anyone deliberately want a child covered in food ? Would it be any different with Jelly? Well at least you could photograph a real live Jelly Baby :rolleyes:

No you skidded by on your bike I know you did as there is still a skid mark on the pavement ;)
 
I didn't realise there was such dislike for these.

I've actually just been asked to shoot one soon and am planning to set up outside that way the mess will be a lot easier to clean up and i'll be using natural light which should make things easier.
 
I did four last weekend. Not everything I do, I do because I want to, some times it is just because I want the cash in my pocket. ;)

For the cake, a light and fluffy sponge, with lots of soft colourful icing. I prefer bold basic colours, green, red, blue yellow etc. I would keep red to a minimum, too much and it can start looking a bit zombie-esque.

From my experience so far (I have not been doing it long) they don't get too messy, certainly not covered. Cake on their hands and around their mush, sure, and a little on their clothes. But not had one yet that wanted to go swimming in a cake.

I suspect it's one of those things that photographers soon come to hate after seeing it done and done and then done some more for good measure but for none photographers or photographers just getting into things it's something new and cool...and yes I know how saying cool makes me sound like a middle aged teacher trying to be down with the kids :eek:
