Windows XP, Trying to remove and clean up the Cache, dam PC is running so slow, just cannot remember how to do it.

any guidence please.

For slow PC issues, look to memory usage (do you have enough RAM to run the processes without swapping?). If not, you can consider removing things you don't need from the startup group on your start menu. Also, check for unwanted services starting in 'automatic' mode (be careful not to disable required windows services). There is another place in the registry that also starts processes.

Some software "helpfully" starts processes at boot or logon. All these add up and make the computer start a lot of processes and take up RAM. If you end up out of RAM your PC will swap and that means lots of disk access and very slow performance.

How much RAM do you have?

Ccleaner may help, but as it XP it's probably been on the PC for some time. You've probably got program fragments all over the place.

Check that you AV software isn't the culprit. I found Norton to slow things down on my old Dell. But what speed it up was a complete reinstall. With Dell it's easy as you've got an app that does it for you. Bit of a pain installing all your old software but you'll be surprised how much you don't need.

Make sure you back up any documents and emails before you do it though

Thanks guys, Seasons Greeting.

I have 1 gb of ram, the only problem in slow running seems to be internet, moving from one site to another, takes for ever...

Running AVG for ages I though out Norton yrs ago, just thought that if i get rid of all the cache build up and history it would help. just given it a de-frag, which has helped a little....

I thought there was away of just cleaning the cache up, but i problem got it wrong......

Saved me some typing there, CT.

If your hard drive is nearly full, that could slow things up too.

CCleaner gets my vote, you can do a Registry clean as well with it.

You may also want to run MSCONFIG (go "start ,run" and type it in). Look at the "Startup" tab and it shows what is starting up with windows. try removing some of the junk in there like the itunes stuff, java updaters etc. If you are unsure what it is just do a google search on the file name on each line and it will say what it is.

If you mean your internet explorer then from the browser on IE (if that's what you are using) Tools>Internet Options and then browsing history and you can delete your history \ cookies etc from there.

who is your Internet provider as 02 have been having a lot of dns issues lately

Have you downloaded the new AVG? If so, the default setting on the internet is to scan each page you open. I had that problem when I installed it on my parents' laptop and had to disable that feature. As a result, I have not installed the new AVG on my computer yet.
