Am I right in thinking that most of the older cable releases for medium format cameras were the same. I could do with one for my Ross Ensign 12-20 and don't want to get a wrong 'un.

pretty much yep - screw thread at one end for fixing to the camera - bowden cable in the middle - like a pushbike brake cable, and a press button release and optional locking device at the other.

Other variant was a plastic/rubber tube and a bulb at the pressing end, for longer distance release than the cable jobs would work!

Anyone bought one off fleabay? These things seem relatively simple.
 
I got one like this bundles with the Holga 120WPC, and it works with pretty much every film camera I've got (except the EOS bodies of course :shrug:)
 
Mark, it looks very medical, like a precision instrument in nature! Is it basically just a jabbing 'needle' on one side, which gets pushed further into your shutter release when you push from the other side?

That shop also offers "Mortoring" stuff, hehe.

It's a pushbike brake cable,with a press button on one end and a screw fit mount on the outer cable at the other end. Can't get any more basic that this really.
 
I like the ones with cloth covered tubes as opposed to the plastic ones which are hard to roll up. I had to spend a bit to get one for my Polaroid because the screw end is instead a rubber bung that fits over the shutter button.

I reckon it's worth getting a decent one because they are much smoother and the lock will be nicer, too - I have mucked up long exposures on my R-D1 by jiggling the cable desperately trying to release the lock with a cheapo one from Jessops
