Anyone travelled recently from Manchester. I am going to Cambodia soon and am concerned that I may have to put my gear in the hold of the plane. Considering buying a Peli 1510 which is the right dimension for carry on bag. Anyone had any problems.... Ian

Ian. Cabin baggage is a standard size and I always carry my camera on board. Make sure you have no screwdrivers/tools in your bag though as you will have to hand them over at security and will almost certainly cause a delay ..... now how do I know that.:embarrassed:

I normally just carry my normal camera bag as my carryon but it is to big now. The pelicase 1510 has the right dimension and would also take all my gear, this is a 5 week trip so my spares are going with me also. Don't want to turn up at the airport only to be told that my gear has to go in the hold.

Thanks for the comments.

shouldn't have any problem with your hard case. flown(?) twice last couple of months and with mine and no hassles.
if its not to late try the calumet case, much cheaper than peli and just as good imho.
have a good trip.

I was worried about this but my 200 AW Lowepro rucksack is well within size limits.

If anyone is unsure the link below is quite useful.

My only worry is should I ask for it to be checked without it going through the x-ray machine? I don't want anything being affected.

The 300AW is Ok sizewise as well - plenty of room :)

X-ray should be OK, mines been through half a dozen times and no probs yet?

well, my Lowepro won't fit in the test bin by security so it is oversized. But I've never had a problem taking it on board.

X-Ray - you WILL have to put it through X-Ray. There's no way to get around it these days. If you take a laptop then it will have to be taken out of any case it is in. If flying to or from or within the stated, you will have to switched it on to show it is a working laptop. I've never had to do this anywhere else. And Nice airport don't even ask for the laptop to be removed from its protective sleave.

Don't mind the laptop going in the hold baggage but I don't understand how you got thru with an oversize bag, all the most recent advisories say that all oversize bags need to go in the hold. Problem is I have to take a lot of stuff on a 5 week trip. I think the Peli may be my best bet and will certainly protect the gear. I can pack my soft bags in my hold baggage and repack when I get there.

it's fine for height and width. It's just too deep. It only just fits into the overhead when onboard. I would have thought that most lowepro backpack jobbies would have the same problem.

Took my Tamrac Expedition 3 over to Germany a little while back, fully loaded with kit and using it as a handbag too, no worries. Make sure you have no more than 0.1 litres of liquid in the bag [I know, why would you?] and you should be fine.

I was actually amazed by what would fit as the dimensions they quote sound so small, but one guy had a small suitcase thing on wheels, plus a laptop case strapped to the long pull out handle, but as it fit in the test bin, he was allowed to take on board.

I use a mini trekker AW and it's fine with carry on

Why am I not surprised? I tried the same thing with a small suitcase which fits in as cabin baggage and a small bag with my camera in it... got sent straight back from security to check in with zero chance of toleration. Not even an explanation. I hate the way I get treated at airports... every time. I asked one policewoman what it is once.... "oh we can't tell where you're from" ... why, cos i'm brown? I sure don't dress like an alien.

Sorry, this could have a bearing on your cabin baggage experience believe it or not. It usually does for me. I must look dodgy :cuckoo:

Sorry to hear about your experience, unfortunately and sadly a sign of the times.:bonk: I have decided and bought a Peli 1510 (£170 total plus a lid sorter) so I will let you all know my experieces with this when I get back.
