No
I'm far from the longest running TP member, but it seems to me that the number of members willing to provide C&C has fallen massively recently.

My partner posted an image today, it's had 500 (ish) views and ZERO comments. Now fair enough, maybe the image is simply crap, but surely a simple "Sorry, don't like because of ABC" would be inline?

Is it my imagination? Your thoughts appreciated....

Edited -> Applies, mainly to People and Portraits (noticeably better in Landscapes section!)

Happy New Year to all BTW.

Cheers.

Dav,

I can't comment for others, of course, but I've been reticent to post comments on pictures because I haven't posted (many) myself. One of my resolutions for 2011 though is to offer up more of my images for c&c so, in return, I'll be offering more C&C myself :)

Good lad (and from 'Brizol' :))! Now get over to People and Portraits and get busy!!!! :)

As a new member who is very amateur I love to look (particularly p&p section) but don't really feel I have any valuable c&c to give so tend to just enjoy silently. I have, however, posted a few photos and been disapointed with the responce as I really want to learn from my many mistakes.

I'm going to attempt a 52 this year in the hopes of improving so will try to comment more on others as well.

I just have. Can we also see the shot you took at the time?

It wasn't of a bloody child was it? :D

I usually comment a lot more than I post pics, but with xmas and being ill as well I've had zero time. I posted a few portraits before xmas, my first studio shoot and got about 3 replies which was disappointing.

Now I am back at work I will have more time too :D

Lesley, it doesn't matter how new you are, you have an opinion and a voice. You don't need to know the technicalities behind something to say if you like it or dislike it and why. Post away, ask questions about it :) If you do on others, people remember you and will make more effort to post on yours :D

Totally agree. A like / dislike is a great start :)

I'd guess some people (and i admit i do this sometimes as well) only comment to others when they post a photo as well.

Being holiday season, it could also be that people just take a quick look on here and not post anything.

I got lots for an image I posted yesterday - don't post too many at the moment.

I do try to pass c&c at times as I like to get some myself, but there's so many pictures posted each day it's hard to comment on all.

New years resolution then. C&C more

I dont really post as much now just for those reasons about non responses.:(

I have to admit i've been in the same boat and only offered c&c on a few that have offered it on mine. So for the new year i'm going to make a new start of it and offer more c&c and post more photo's myself. Even if it is just what i think works or not in a photo.

I've decided to stop putting up shots in the film forum because I don't get any comments whatsoever.
Even if they are dire (as some/all probably are) I would even appreciate a "don't post shots until you're better" type comment as I could build on that.

I've more or less given up posting comments on pics anymore. When I post a pic, just dont get any responses so why should I bother commenting on anyone elses pic?

Well, try that and you'll get stamped on my members and mods here, though. ;)

I can understand that, but it's upto people like us to make a change.

Here's an idea. Mods, any chance of a "I like" "I dislike" set of radio buttons on each C&C post? At least that way there's no excuse for people not providing some very simple feedback.

That is a pity.

I am a newcomer and very inexperienced with PS progs (I don't even have PS but I do have other photo manipulation tools)

I like to see peoples offerings and study the following comments as I think that I will learn a lot from this.

Sometimes I post a response and hope that others will agree, but I feel that I am over-stepping the mark occasionally as there are more, better qualified folk than me on here and feel that it should be their place to correct, not mine.

Then again even my unqualified, amateur response is better than nowt, I guess.

After all, in any gallery, open to the public, the viewers simply, either like or dislike - Qualified or otherwise.

EDIT_ just read the previous comment and the Radio buttons would be a great idea - Coupled with a THANKS button.

Actually I find I learn more by commenting. It forces me to consider the image, the pros and cons and any suggestions, plus gives me further insight when others offer comments also. It's all part of the learning process.

Terry - I understand where you are coming from. You have every right to comment - irrespective of your experience :)

I quite often use phrases such as IMHO when providing feedback.

Byker - totally agree. Off topic, what happened to Bart?

I appreciate what you're saying, but if that's your attitude, you become part of the problem instead of part of the solution.

To be fair though that's a bit of a vicious circle. You don't get crit so you don't offer it, the next person doesn't get it so they don't offer it and so it goes on.

As someone relatively new to the forum I haven't offered much crit in the past - mainly because I've little technical advice to offer. However this is something I'm going to change even if the crit is a bit basic. One thing I do believe though is that it's much harder to crit a portrait than just about anything else.

For me this is because even if it's technically perfect (not that I'd know!) a lot of the time it's still just a picture of someone's partner or kid. I tend to open the thread, look and just sort of say "meh, another head and shoulders shot of a normal looking stranger - spin on". I don't even care enough to have an opinion on whether I like it or not. The picture is forgotten before the next page loads.

Put it like this, you wouldn't expect a flood of responses to a technically competent "auto-trader style" picture of a navy blue Ford Fiesta sat on a drive. However you would expect more comment on either the above Fiesta mid-crash/power slide etc or on a much more interesting car. So unless the portrait is either of somebody who looks inherently interesting or is of somebody normal looking but in an interesting situation/environment then it's a real struggle to do more than shrug and go elsewhere.

I'm not saying there aren't interesting portraits on here but sometimes it's hard to see the wood for the trees.

I wholeheartedly agree

I've seen you throw a tizzy as no one commented within three hours of posting so I'll admit to not being in a hurry as the pace of comment is apparently more important to you.

I don't comment on areas in which I have no interest and so that means Nudes and Glamour, People and Portraits or Transport/Motorsports.

Obviously over the holiday period all our routines have been upset but I have endeavoured to keep up comments as many have more time to take and post at this time.

You have to look further into the shot than that - the pose, the lighting, the clarity, the background etc etc.

Agreed, but there has to be something there to hold my interest in the first place.

I believe one of the reasons why landscape does well in comparison is that people go out of their way to find something inherently interesting to shoot. The picture is often worth looking at even if it's technically flawed - I'm interested enough to spend 2 minutes thinking of how to improve it.

If it pops up in new posts or unanswered posts I'll have a look at most stuff, but generally stick to areas I'm interested in.

Obviously over the holiday period all our routines have been upset but I have endeavoured to keep up comments as many have more time to take and post at this time.

Yup, that, and workloads/spare time etc.

I think the problem with the 'Show Us Your Film shots' thread (assuming that's where you posted them) is that it's been running far too long and has become part of the furniture. I don't see why you shouldn't just post your film shots in their own thread as you would elsewhere on the forum and probably get more attention?

I'm sorry but I don't understand your comment.

I think all he means Laurence is that if anyone posted a comment in the manner you suggested, they'd quite rightly get torn a new one by the mods for unecessary rudeness.

Yep.

I try to comment on photos as often as possible and although most of my posts are on the level of "nice photo" I still have a go.

I still give C&C on a regular basis regardless of responses or non responses to my own photo posts and think there are some who take the forum stats too far and some even pursue non active posters etc.

Attitudes of If they wont C&C mine then I wont C&C theirs will only help kill off these forum sections, Maybe people should try to give some C&C regardless of whether they have received C&C themselves.

My issue is I do most my browsing in my lunch break at work where photo sharing is blocked so I can only see about 10% of images posted. At home I have little time to really look so only tend to do so on odd occasions.

However if I post an image for crit I do make a point of spending some time attempting to comment on some others, and try to ensure it's more than just "nice shot", even if its "nice shot because .....". Theory is if I don't bother why should anyone else.

I agree, I have noticed a downturn in the amount posted.

I am just as guilty as everyone else of not offering enough c&c. I generally tend to have TP open in the background while I am working at home, and I leave tabs open in safari for images I like that I want to C&C later when I have more time to write something, but I always end up forgetting and get caught up in other things.

Perhaps I should just write the c&c there and then...

(gives himself an F- "must try harder") :D

Like buttons would be really useful. That would work as crit as people might not publicly say something is pants but having no likes on something is a dead giveaway that the consensus is it isn't that good.

Perhaps there should be an easy crit wizard :D

Hey Dav

I'm new here and comment on a lot of shots and haven't posted much at the moment because I'm just kinding feeling my way around

thing is, like Lesley up there ^^^^^^, it kinda feels a bit off doing C&C on a "proper" toggers work, ya know, seems a little disrepectful really... also, I end up gushing a lot about shots that I find very striking and therefore repeatedy oooh and ahhh and say how lovely they are, but after a while you kinda wonder whether people would rather you didn't say that because it may not appear genuine, when it is! I've run out of expletives (of the good variety ;) to say how brilliant some of the work on here is)

anyhoooooooo...

out of curiosity - where does it show the amount of views per pic... I don't see that anywhere?????????? or rather, I'm not sure I know what I'm looking for - but I would like to be able to see that!

I don't really see the point in the above. It does nothing to help you improve your photography.

Just makes you warm and fuzzy at the 'likers' and cold and angry at the 'dislikers'.

I am as guilty as anyone. Never post up photos for C&C (and very rarely comment on other people's images).

But if I DID post an image, and someone ticked the 'dislike' box...... I would want them to give their reasons why.

I assume most people post up images they like and are hoping for mostly compliments, and maybe a small bit of constructive criticism that will turn their image into a winner. The truth is, many of the images are little more than snaps, but if you post that in the thread you become 'public enemy No1'.

I have not been a member of the forum for long, but I like to try and comment on as many threads as I can, my main area of photography is long exposures, specifically light trails, so I tend to comment on every light trail shot that I see on the forums, but I like to try all aspects of photography and I am trying to develop my skills.

I hope that members value my thoughts on there posts, as I know that I have valued the input from all that have comment on my posts.

I must admit, i'm also put off posting pictures due to the lack of comments and just think why bother. I thought I would give it another go the other day and posted in people and portraits, which at last check had around 120 views and only 1 comment before it fell off the bottom of the page.

To be honest it's a useful part of this forum to get other peoples views and feedback on a picture good or bad and is a great way to learn and improve. It is a shame that this side is not working so well at the moment :(
