The above item listed on amazon but the question is if I buy this filter can I use reducer rings on my 77mm lens down to 55mm and also will I lose quality doing this. Cheers
 
If your lens takes 77mm ø filters and you stick a 55mm ø filter on it, you'll get horrendous vignetting.
 
No you cant as you will get a circular 'hole' with your image in the center unless you 'zoom' through it. A b&w filter will not degrade iq much. Just buy the correct size.

720mm at the long end (35mm eq!)...

Cheers for that, how about the other way then, if I buy the bigger lens can I reduce down to fit a smaller lens?
 
77mm ø filter on 55mm ø lens = no problem. Sourcing and affording the 77mm ø 10 stopper might be!
