Thinking of a second hand 300 2.8 lens is there a way of checking if its stolen or not as its alot of money to throw away.

You could try asking Plod if a lens with the serial number ABC 123987 is of interest to them.

I really hope they would have better things to be concentrating on!

Check the grey import sites to see if there similar prices, that way you get a warranty and no its not stolen.

You can generally get a good idea of whether somethings legit based on the circumstances:

- Is seller a photographer (do they have other lenses)
- Do they have a reason for sale (upgrading, changing camera maker)
- Do they have a back story for the lens (when they bought it, where they've used it)

I'd look to avoid...
- selling for a friend
- do they claim to have little knowledge about lenses (often combines with the next one)
- selling particularly cheap
- won't meet in person (if you ask to come to them)

Just ask as many questions as you feel the need to. If it feels right then go for it, any doubts at all just walk away.

Cash only local deals are a bit iffy! Paying by credit card affords some protection, but never used it myself - perhaps others can provide further info on this?

Just found this number for Canon ,called them and very helpful.
02087314132.

I'd avoid buying from those cashconvertor type shops. One by me had a particularly suspicious DSLR in the window. No case, no battery charger, no manual, no discs, not even a lens cap. The only lens with it was a 100-300 zoom with fingerprints all over the glass.
