Hi all, Just after a bit of advice.

I am looking on ebay to buy a used lens, dont know what yet something with a wide angle or fisheye. Only problem is I dont fully understand the fitments, I have an EOS1000. whats the difference in ef and af fitments etc. Obviously I dont want to spend money on a lens that doesnt fit :(

Thanks for any advice much appreciated.

Rob

EF is the lens mount, a 1000D will take either EF or EF-S (that's what Canon call them), basically, if you're after a good wide-angle, even though I don't have it (I did test one) I'd recomment a Tokina 11-16mm f2.8, superb quality on it, and you'll save a bunch versus the Canon 10-22mm (partly because the Canon will go on a full-frame sensor, the Tokina won't). Sigma 10-20mm also very good, beautiful colours and contrast, but usual Sigma quality control issues and back/front focussing

You can buy an EF or an EF-S lens, but the EF-S ones are specifically designed for your body as it has a 1.6 crop factor. (the sensor is 1.6 times smaller than a 35mm piece of film) The 'S' in EF-S simply means short back focus and indicates the lens is designed for your crop camera, and won't work on a film or full frame digital camera such as the EOS 1 or 5D.

An EF lens might cost you more but it means if you ever go full frame you won't have to get rid of it for another model. EF lenses are also quite advantageous as any sharpness, vignetting or CA problems that often occur in the corners of lenses are near enough negated because your sensor is smaller than a full frame, meaning you will only be using the sweet part of the lens :)

Personally I'd keep looking on here for used lenses - they will have been owned by photographers.

I've bought a lot of stuff on here and been pleased with all of it - and saved a load of money as well.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Would like a nifty first then maybe some fixed lens, I ain't too bothered in doing long distance shooting so not bothered about a zoom.

Thanks guys

Have purchased 2 cameras, and about 5 lenses off ebay and never had a problem, all have been superp at excellent prices. Just do your research into the sell etc.

the Tokina indeed gets rave reviews - but is expensive

a highly rated 2nd choice is the Tamron 11-18..."here"

BTW - for Canon, the review by Ken Rockwell(c) .."here" ...says
""I'd buy the Canon 10 - 22 mm lens in an instant if I had a Canon digital camera. The Canon 10 - 22 mm is better than any of these four lenses, including the Nikon.""

The Canon 10-22 will be fine on the 1000D but it is an ef-s mount which means it definitely will NOT work on full frame.

When buying a lens on ebay take the details the seller pust in title/description with a pinch of salt.

Do your research first, and find out which lenses meet your criteria. In doing so you will understand there is generally only one version of each lens in a Canon mount. If it is Canon mount, and it is an autofocus lens then it will fit onto your 1000D.

A 'Nifty Fifty' IS a fixed lens!!

I'm new to photography and was advised to get a nifty fifty which i did and i got it from ebay and is was excellent advice and i've had no problem with the lens.
Very happy,
Lance.

I would also look into how much the lens is new on somewhere like onestop digital I found that I could get a new lens from there for not much more than they go for on ebay and at least will give you an idea how much to bid:)

WHY do either ..:cuckoo:.......[Nikon man here] but doesn't "kerso" offer all you canonites the best 50 deal in town ??

only wish he would do the same for a Nikon 50 1.8...............:bang:

Hi Rob,

Whilst eBay can be very good, I would personally steer clear of buying camera gear from there! Just my thoughts and experience I might add.

You have no idea of the history nor serviceability of the items. At least on here you can see the history of an individual who would be unlikely to want to tarnish their reputation by selling an item that was not as described.

If you keep looking, what you want will almost certainly come up for sale.

Best regards

Chris

I have bought loads of stuff from ebay both from the UK and abroad and have only had one problem where I received the wrong lens but the seller sorted it out very quickly, as others have said do your research and check the sellers feedback on recent transactions.

Thanks for all the replies I'll take a look through them
all been away for a few days so haven't had chance.

Thank you
