Hello

Im after a 40d and im looking around ebay at some prices.

I see a few sellers located in HK are offering UK spec bodies and kits, but can these be registered with canon in the UK for a UK warrenty? Like wise if there not listed as UK spec can they still be registered here??

I'd always be wary of buying anything electrical without a UK warrenty and id prefer to support local business, But with the amount of money to be saved im not sure if a 1year uk warrenty is worth that much!

Other thing i was thinking, if i got a 40d and found i couldnt register a UK warrenty, do the likes of the insurance cover from photoguard or who ever cover ANY faults (unless caused by mis-use etc) with the camera?

Cheers for any help.:)

Not sure about insurance. They should cover it if you have the proof of purchase, but the level of cover they offer may only match what you apid for it and not the full UK price.

Look on the Canon website to see what internantioanl warranties cover. Most HK-bought stuff comes with one. A mate bought soem Sigma stuff from HK and one lens broke so it got sent to Sigma HQ (UK) to get sorted and not back to HK.

Make sure you figure in import tax and VAT when you buy. Customs will more than likeley make sure that you have to pay it. I think camera bodies are charged at 6% import duty and 17.5% VAT. Some Hong Kong-based sellers offfer a full refund on VAT and duty if you send the receipt that you get from the courier through to them.

I think HK seller Digtial Rev does this.

Kerso (member on here) provides good prices for Canon stuff ... he imports from the US, but then sells the equipment from Scotland, so you avoid paying the import duty yourself, and the delivery time is much lower.

You can contact him either by PM on here, or by emailing him at kerso1123@msn.com. Lots of people here use him ... just search the forums' threads for his name for more information.

I got a 40D from HK, from DigitalRev. Great service and you save so much money.

I saved well over £100.

I have bought a fair bit from HK, never had a problem, mind you, I have just bought a 580 and 'NiftyFifty' from Kerso and that was a very fast transaction.

You pays your money ....

Just to add my bit, regarding warranty issue's, when I bought my 40D from Ian (kerso) the sensor was filthy so I spoke to Colchester Camera's and they said they were happy to do it under warranty, I told them that it was an import but they said so long as I bought the invoice in with a UK address on it they would be happy to do it.
Not sure if they would still have the same attitude if it was an expensive fault, and I cleaned it myself in the end to save the trip and wait cause they were quoting 10 days just for a sensor clean.

can you get cashback from items brought in HK?

I bought from Digital Rev in Hk

They have a UK contact No. for warranty and other issues and will arrange collection and return themselves.

RE the 10 days it only takes a day and a half to get from UK to HK with courier.

Bought a few high price items from DigitalRev and can only confirm the highest quality of service.

Goods usually arrive quicker than any UK supplier I have ever dealt with and I never have to gamble on getting a reply to any email I send!

Usually cheapest on the web too ...

Most people seem to get away without any custom charges, although there is always the exception. As for the Tax, cameras are charged at 17.5% and no additional duty, where are lenses and other bits of equipment are charged at 17.5% tax and also another 6% duty on top, plus a £12 handling charges by who ever delivers the item. Most of these HK firms offer a no tax incentive and I believe they honour this if you get stung, as for the warranties, they vary from international warranties to shop warranties where you have to send the item back to HK for repair. I looked at this and the offers are great campared to UK prices, but becareful and read all the information on their sites before buying as they are one or two pitfalls

i bought my 120-300mm from URGALAXY in HK and they send through 'repair paperwork' stating that the goods are of no commercial value, although they are brand new, to avoid paying anything...

i just sent off for a canon 400D battery off kerso but it says he is on holiday :( i had to email him coz its got my old address on my ebay so it wud have sent it to the wrong person lmao

Cheers for the info chaps :)

Decided to take the plunge and will be ordering one tomorrow, Just trying to work out the best deals at the min.

Some of the deals going are unbeliveable! eg 40d + 17-85 IS + Canon Grip + 580ex for a little over the uk price of the 40d+17-85!!

will be a long night lol.

Let us know how it goes, mate. That's pretty much the setup I'm looking at. Go on, take the plunge for me :D

It's always best to ask Kerso for a quote outside Ebay, email worked for me. You may well get a better price.

Everything I've seen so far suggests that Kerso is more expensive than an HK import, though not by much, but that little extra money is a little extra peace of mind (posted in the UK and all that). I'll find out when I go for a Speedlite on Friday :D

Kerso is the best on the web imo for importing to UK. A UK receipt allows cashbacks, (I've received over £150 in cashbacks) very resonable prices, no import worries and throw in excellent customer service and there's not a lot more to be said!

HK are cheap but worries over iimport duty and grey imports have put me off them for anything other than cheap filters.

With HK there's also the problem of warranties and problems with breakages and repair, Although
Purely Gadgets
are offering a great deal on the sigma 120-300mm f2.8 at the moment at least £250 better than another UK distributor, but then again their not offering a proper warranty with this item and its an inhouse warranty

Plunge taken

Ordered a 40d+17-85 and get a load of free stuff thrown in.
3day shipping, no tax/tax refunded, bought from Digital Rev. which seem to operate a UK repair service and supposedly honour warrenty etc. Still going to take out insurance on it as well though just to be safe.

Good price too, saving about £150 over the UK price for the kit.

Hopefully be with me on friday :D

Four day delivery?! You'll be lucky! But yeah, let me know how it goes :)

Ordered my 40d and grip on a Friday from DigitalRev and they were trying to deliver it on the Monday afternoon.

Got charged £33 by customs. DigitalRev had the money back into my bank account within 24 hours.

They also answered all my emails promptly and kept me informed all the way through ... Can't say the same about everyone else I have dealt with.

I'm happy to be corrected :)
