Buying first DSLR...

Thats Ok but if the AF motor goes wrong in the camera then your stumped. If the motor goes in your lens then at least you can still use your camera with another lens.

Thats a very good point, that I hadn't considered! :)

Is the D5000 better than D90 at higher ISO, or are they about the same?

D5000 is better based on all the research I did. I believe it is actually the same sensor as the D90, but other magic is at work in the D5000 in order to improve its low noise capabilities. Obviously D700, D3, etc is in a different league entirely when it comes to low noise (as are their prices!) but for a consumer level dSLR, the D5000 packs a punch in my opinion.

Also.. I use the titling screen on the D5000 a lot more than I thought I would!

And I think you will find even if the in body motor packs up you will still be able to use AFS in built motorised lenses.
That is what the D90 and other camera bodies with motors offer!
Both not one or the other :)

Is the 50mm 1.8 really that good? Girl in Jacobs said that since she has bought one she uses nothing else!! She is well impressed by it!!

I use a 35mm f/1.8 and if I'm honest, its on my camera over 90% of the time - extremely useful in lots of situations.

I am looking at the D3100 and waiting to see what the reviewers have to say about it.

The D3100 does sound like an improvement over the D3000, but the D5000 still trumps it in a few ways... I'd imagine/expect the release of a D5100 at some point! :)

Which ups the price even more.

Yes, indeed it will, and as D5000's can be had for pretty reasonable prices right now it would depend on whether people thought the new features of a D5100 would be worth it.

Thought I'd update this and say thanks for all the helpful comments. I've decided on the D90. I took a borrowed one out for a camera club outing and really enjoyed using it all day. Got to compare it side by side with a D7000 yesterday and I think the D90 is fine for me. Hopefully will get it in the next couple of weeks. Going with the 18-105 lens, second lens will be either be 35 or 50mm, probably 1.8 as its a bit cheaper (though currently using the 50mm 1.4 D lens which is very nice).
