Buying a used car privately

I understand that the dvla says road tax cannot now go with a car you sell, fair enough. What about the private buyer, is he/she expected to leave the car they just bought from a private seller at their premises while the seller sends his part of the registration form to the dvla and get the new owner into the system.

I suppose technically speaking if Ibuy a used car privately I can't legally drive it away from the seller, I can't get road tax online within the hour cos as far as dvla knows the seller is still the owner not the person who has just bought it until they receive the registration slip. Nothing is ever simple with the dvla is it.

It is not that bad - you can use the small green slip (V5c/2) at a local post office, tax the vehicle online or over the phone to the DVLA.

I watched the Met police officer who bought DH's motorbike do this on his phone on the evening he picked the bike up.

I watched the Met police officer who bought DH's motorbike do this on his phone on the evening he picked the bike up.

Although atm, its only a beta system and some only have a 10 or 11 digit reference, and in that case it has to be post office or possibly over the phone. Had to do one 2 weeks ago which hadn't changed hands for several years and the system simply wouldn't accept the reference number, so off to the post office we went.

WE? You kicked me out of the door and pointed me in the right direction!!! All sorted in a few minutes (including the walk there and back) and the PO even sent the docs off for me, saving me the postage!

I was hoping that the new documents would have a 12 digit number (although its next keeper is likely to be the great scrapyard at the top of the hill!!!) but no, still 11 digits. Not going to try to find out why, just accept that it could be a PITA if it ever goes on to another party for driving rather than stripping (and will even give them a lift to the PO to do it!) Hopefully, I'll be able to tax it online using the reminder number if when it passes its MOT - if not, I'll give myself a lift to the PO to do it!

Call me stupid, but if the car is currently taxed, surely it's going to take a while for the system to realise that the car was sold and no longer taxed.

The previous owner has to send in the forms first and somebody has to update the computer, so as long as the computer sees the car as being taxed, who's going to stop you if you drive the car home and tax it the following day.

Prob no one but if you were unfortunate enough to be involved an accident on the way home the insurance lot would probably wriggle out of paying up because you didn't have any tax. Mind you you could always ring your insurer and find out if that was true or not before going to collect a car I suppose.
