Hi All,

I'm new to this forum and looking to buy a entry level digital SLR, I have spent loads of time looking and not really got too far with the decision of what to buy.

Second hand looks to be a good avenue to get a better spec camera and lens kit but you never know exactly what you’re getting and being a novice could quite easily get ripped off.

So I was thinking about the refurbished route I have found Canon, Pentax etc refurbished outlets is there one for Nikon? If there is what’s its address?
I guess I have a budget of £300 what do you lot suggest?

Look forward to hearing from you

try ebay and the for sale section here. I would go for a 450d new or something like a 20d or a 30d second hand, you should be able to find something, just shop around until you have something that suits the type of photography you want to do.

Go to a shop like Jessops and have a good feel of all the cameras which suit your budget (new and secondhand). I was convinced I was going to get a Canon until I had a good fondle :D of the cameras. Ended up with a D60.

the biggest thing as suggested is how comfortable the different cameras feel. i.e. nikon , canon, pentax, sony etc... then you can worry about the feature set and budget.

what type of photography do you intend to get into, sport landscape etc as its probably a good idea to see if you will be able come up with the cash in the future for other lenses.

At the moment its photos of my new daughter but prior to her arrrival it was mainly landscapes i guess

What do you suggest

I have just spoken to Jessops they have a D40 going with 18-55 lens that within budget would that be a good buy?

You've been given some good advice here. Go to a large dealer, handle various cameras and see what personally suits you.

Despite the claims made by manufacturers, there is little to choose between the image quality produced by different bodies - it's the lenses that affect image quality.

The main differences between the various bodies and the amounts you pay for them are:
1. Build quality
2. Level of water resistance
3. Ease of use
4. No of shots that can be taken in a burst, and number of shots that can be taken per second.

All these factors are vitally important for news and sports photographers but paying a lot extra is a waste of money if you're only photographing landscapes :-)

dude. try online retailers who may be cheaper than jessops.

i got lots of my kit from mpb photographic.
