Evening.

Im looking at upgrading our Kodak compact camera & maybe starting photography as bit of a new hobby.
I am looking at these 2 cameras but can't decide & want some advice if poss.

Panasonic gf3
nikon j1

any help/suggestions would be great.
I'll mainly be taking pics of my kids, dog, car & a few live gigs.

Cheers, Matt.

I have never handled either camera,so no help ,but the usual answer is to handle both at a shop to see which you like.
The next problem is finding a shop these days.

I suggest you do a search for each camera in turn on this forum and see if owt comes up.
Failing that do a google search for the cameras but add review to the search.
Best of luck mate.

Is there a reason why you've narrowed it down to those? What is it that you've seen that you like about them? It may make it easier for people to help you if they know what you look for.

you might be best looking at dslr's because you might want to upgrade later

I don't know how I came to these really, they just seem to be the most popular at the moment.
I'll have a trip to currys & comet to have a hands on feel of them.

Cheers, Matt.

gf 3 is pretty good - missus uses it on auto ai (does it all).
Has a naff pop up flash though with kit lens 14-45 (ish?) I think you get the lens shadow and have to tilt the flash a littl with your finger... plus all its metering doesn't seem to work well with it...

However no flash its brill light easy to use.

Alternatives :
g series, nex 5/nex 7?, samsung nx200, nikon j1/v1

Not used the nikons, but had a play in store, and they seem pretty good. The crop factor on the sensor put me off a little (think its 2.7x?) but that does mean that coupled with a 300mm lens you have a stonker for birds/motorsport! Quality is meant to be pretty good too, think there is a thread on here in the equipment section that shows the pictures taken with it and any possible problems... Think there is one for the gf series too...

Best to go n handle them and as many others as you can..!

I have own both of these cameras having recently traded my GF3 in against a J1. The Nikon feels much more solid in the hand and feels more likely to cope with the odd bump or bruise. I was concerned by the smaller senser in the J1 but the image quality has not suffered and the levels of noise seem no worse than the Panasonic. The built in flash on the Nikon is much better, it seems more powerful and the camera seems to expose flash shots more reliably.

How about an Fuji X10? Great camera, good in low light, compact, solid body and looks amazing. Also got an optical viewfinder.

They're £350 brand new on Amazon or around £300 second hand.

cheers for all the replies.
will be out tomorrow having a feel of them, then back home for some more googling.

thanks again, matt.

Evening all.
So after spending the morning in between currys & comet having a feel of a few cameras I have bought the Panasonic GF3.

Got it home unboxed it & charged it ready for some testing tomorrow.

Cheers, Matt.

Also his budget is £300.

Still raining so not much chance to do alot with the camera.
Will upload a couple of pics at some point this weekend.
