hi
Im looking in to getting a macro lens, botanic's, insects ect. ive looked at some reviews and was going to get the Canon efs 100mm macro. i read on another forum the 50mm with extension tubes will give almost the same results but give you the option vary the focal length.
is this a misconception? the thread was quite old and dead.

any advice here would be much appreciated

Paul

There's no doubt that you can get some good shots with a 50 and tubes, I've done it many times myself. But, if I want really great shots in macro you really should try and get a dedicated macro lens. I have the canon 100 L macro and the IQ of the shots is definitely better than the 50 and tubes.
You can use tubes on the macro lens to get higher than a 1:1 magnification, but using a tube set means you have to get really close to the subject to get focus. With the 100 macro the working distance is around 8 inches whereas with the 50 and tubes it'll be half of that or even less. The 100 macro non L has very similar optics to the 100 L but is around half the price.

thats a great help, think ill go for the 100mm in that case.
Thanks for the help

Paul
