I'm looking to create my own web site and I've been recommended to use Photium, which seems as good as any. I want to buy my domain name and Iw as told to use 123reg. This is very cheap for a couple of years but what happens after that, I assume they jack the price right up because you have to keep it or lose all your hard work?

FWIW

I got caught some years ago in that the site I used for the purchase charged a transfer fee to move a domain to another registering parking site. Long story short I have used names.co.UK for years. They have a good IMHO user control panel and for the record I do not put my domain under the control of website hosts I use.



I use A tags direction and redirection as required which how my photium site is utilised.

Never had an issue and been with them eight years.............In fact I'd say it's the best company I deal with next to Amazon who are 2nd!
 
I've used Fasthosts for several years without problems.

Avoid cheap just because it's cheap, customer service doesn't often cost a lot more with domain registrations. And it's sensible to avoid using the same company for domain registration that you're using for hosting the website.

Same reason it's best practice to host images separately from any forum(s) you're active on. In the event of a dispute you don't lose control of everything.

If your domain host and web host are separate:
  • If your domain host throws a wobbly, you still have your website and can quickly register and point a new domain towards it. The truly paranoid might have .co.uk, .com and/or .photography domains under more than one registrar.
  • If your web host goes under, you can upload your backup to a new host and point the old domain(s) toward it.
Whilst you can upload to a new host and register a new domain if one provider takes both down, it's easier to have only one to do at a time..
 
I use Bigwetfish (https://bigwetfish.hosting/), probably not the cheapest but the best service I have received. I use them for domain names and hosting. Can't fault them. Big enough to be reliable and efficient, small enough to be personal and to care.

I use Squarespace, but I've been with them for less than a year. I know someone who's used them for several years and reports no problems. You could use Google for domain names if you'd rather.
 
I use 123 to host my site, I do wonder about the speed sometimes but have to say I've been fully satisfied with their service.

With regard to web design, I'd been using Word Press for my blog so went that route and added Photocrati which I consider excellent, especially the way the NexGen plug-in handles galleries and ecommerce, which I was struggling with.

Word Press is free, as was NexGen, but you have to pay for Photocrati, well worth it in my opinion

I use vidahost who are the same company as TSO hosts - recommended above, I've only received great service from them
 
I tend to use one or two registrars.

Enom

And startssl for my certificates that require validation.

And as Alastair mentioned keep them separate from your hosting. Although in practise there aren't many official registrars like enom as most mentioned previously are just resellers. The key is to spread your DNS services.

If you are using a .com then yes the IP address - not necessarily hosting location - will impact. I'm not so sure that if you already use a country domain whether it matters then.

It was what I was told when looking, but I don't know
Maybe worth checking, as I was buying a co.uk
 
I'm pretty certain that the algorithm for ranking is to first check the domain name for country code and score that higher if the country matches, however if it is a TLD then it will have no option but to use the IP address to try and determine the location instead. When combining the two there may be an advantage but I doubt it will be a big difference in reality.

This thread is about buying a domain name, not where the site is hosted!!


We use GoDaddy at work and I have used them in the past. They can be very unforgiving of late renewals and renewals can be very expensive.
123-reg are just plain awful. Cheap and cheerful.
No problems with either pickaweb or fasthosts .. although I've hit a problem setting up DKIM records with a 1024 bit key due to restriction in the size of DNS records I can create with fasthosts. This is only a problem if/when hosting your own email server.
