Buying a domain name (?)

As the co.uk is litrally a couple of quid a year then yes its a good idea to protect the name you have chosen from being hijacked.. of course theres a very very lot of tlds (co.uk , uk, org) loads and loads but .com and .co.uk are still the top two..
 
Personally i use a text editor to make mine.... i beleive wordpress is populor for people who dont know what they are doing haha... oops :)

Yes you will need hosting for any website you wish to build, I would suggest TSOHost - I use them as do a number of others here on TP

There is nothing wrong with using wordpress for your website either
 
Because they are crap, simple as that really

They used to be good but got bought out by another company and now the service is rubbish
 
If you are planning on using both domain names, make sure one is canonical.
In other words, the non-canonical domain should do a HTTP 301 redirect to the canonical one.

If you are optimising for UK based search results, make the .co.uk domain canonical. Set this up as the domain that your website actually uses.
The the .com domain should HTTP 301 redirect to the .co.uk. There are many ways of implementing this - you favourite search engine will help.

Using a 302 redirect or hosting multiple copies of your website will hurt your SEO.

Yes we can tel. It looks like a site designed by someone more comfortable with coding than building a visually stimulating website.

It looks like its meant to.. I dont want a visualy stimulating website.. i want a store thats very simple to sell pictures... it is what it is and it is what its meant to be... Oh and just in case you decide I am wrong and I need soemthign else.... IT WORKS :)
 
Just to get things moving you could start a blog e.g. blogger or tumblr and have the domain redirect there.
Blogger for example gives you a fair bit of free space and you can change the template so much it doesn't look like 'a journal' so much as a normal web page.
After a little while you'll get some text and showpiece pictures that might transpose into a proper website later.
 
Easiest is just to park domain (secondary domain) if hosting allows that. Straight foward redirect without any issues. MOD EDIT ; DELETED

Had occasion to call TSOHost support for the first time last week.

I thought they were good before, but it was a surprisingly pleasant experience to talk to someone who knew what they were talking about. Compared with the last time I had to call 1and1's support (not my choice, legacy domain bought by someone else) it was like night and day.

And TSO's management tools straightforward and make sense (to someone who's been managing domains for 20 odd years at least).

Thoroughly recommended.

Just imagine how much better it could work. Then again retro is in :p

If you've got your domains I would just get a hosting package and with one click you've got Wordpress etc installed. It's s great platform to build from, or alternatively use something like Drupal.

Hand coding a website doesn't make any sense unless you have some very specific needs. Don't get me wrong, I do a lot of the time as well, but those are for specific applications not some general photography based website.

1and1 are terrible and you have to opt-out of automatic renewal.

A company we bought has been using 1and1 for years and has umpteen domains and hosting with them.

I'd plan a migration, but it would be a lot of work.

Ugh!
 
1and 1 would say worst on that, took several lenghty calls and nearly 2 days of time till I pointed one domain to my hosting (but that domain was part of e-commerce bundle my clients had with 1and1 so thats why maybe it took so long, as clients needed to cancel their 1and1 e-commerce subscription and go for domain only package. Also it took 3 calls just to cancel that!). BUT customer service is very very poor anyway.
 
I've used 34SP.com to host our band website for the last 8 or 9 years and they've been very helpful when need be.

Originally used Microsoft Frontpage to build the site, but as Microsoft dropped support for Frontpage some time ago, I went over to using Wordpress which is a doddle to get a basic site up and running. Though there are no doubt more powerful tools than Wordpress, I'm quite happy so far.

the photography website template that I like the look of is squarespace. it also has the benefit of not needing web hosting. after having tried wordpress a few times, I find it a pain in the rear. no doubt it is powerful and very customisable, but for me that came at the cost of me pulling my hair out and not having as good looking a site as I could easily have had with squarespace. It also does web commerce, but I have no idea how good they are on that front, but the design build and tailoring is very quick effective.

I've used 1 and 1 for a long time now and have had very good service from them, they are very responsive, answer the phones, reply to emails, fix problems and refund money. A lot better than any other hosting company I have used, I would recommend them.

Sorry, I don't know what 'canonical' means in the world of hosting and web design. I intend to use only my .com web domain name. Is the hosting place 'SmugMug' and good for hosting does anyone know please?

I use SmugMug and I think it does a pretty good job but it depends on what you want. I just wanted an easy way to share photos with family and friends. It's a bit weird to get used to how to build the galleries and so on but once you work it out it's easy to extend. Link to my SmugMug site is in my profile.
