I have been offered a Canon 24-70 2.8L for £500 but it has a very slight scratch on the front element which he has assured me is only coating deep.

What i would like to know is would it be expensive to get the element replaced or would it be worth the £500 price tag to just use as it is with no effect on image quality, Ie how bad does a scratch need to be before it actually makes a difference.

Find out how much a replacement would cost - probably only about £120 and compare that to a standard used one

Test shoot it at f/22 into the sun, if you don't see any side effects it shouldn't be a problem

Great price!

I will try that if i do indeed buy it. Still not too bad a price if £120 would fix the problem.

The going rate for a mint used one that isn't too old is about £750

Check the age, find out the cost of replacing the front element (and indeed test how much of a problem it is...)

I had looked on ebay and seen them going for £800 to £900 so i thought it was a good price. Im going to take a gamble on it now and go for it. Thanks for the replies.
