Hi folks.. not been posting for a while but haven't lost the bug..

I'm actually going to buy a camera today probably but not sure if i want a lens with it..

Basically do I get a body only or do i get a 18-55 lens with image stabilising?

My dad has a 400d so has non IS lenses (canon 18-55, cannon 70-300 and a sigma 18-50 as well as some telephoto monster lens)

Is it worth me getting an IS version of the same lens or should I save pennies and get another kind of lens which would compliment the lenses my old boys already got and is available to me.

I take and would like to take.. car photos at shows, motorsport pics, night pics of cars and cityscapes and also quite like macro photography.

Thanks,

Graeme

The 18-55 IS kit lens is supposed to be reasonably good, so I'd get that (then its yours and your're not borrowing anyone elses.

However your dads got two lenses covering 18-55 so you could save some money and use his kit lens.

Decisions...

Given that you have the use of an 18-55 non IS, I would say save the dosh....

He is quite happy for me to use the canon 18-55 as he was proudly showing me his sigma so I wouldn't be lenses and always borrowing.. just not sure if the IS is really good enough to merit a 3rd lens of the same range.

PS what is a nifty 50? Just any lens that has a fixed focal length of 50mm?
I read mostly that nifty 50's are f1.8.. are the f1.4's/1.2s etc still nifty 50's?
Is that something I should consider getting instead of the kit lens?

I bought a body only.. I'll spend some time using my dad's lenses and find out what I need after some experimenting.

Excited :D:clap::nuts:

I think, and stand to be proved wrong, that the Niffty Fifty is the Canon 50mm 1.8.
Good lens and cheep as chips.

P.s Congrats on the buy

Going by the price of the canon 50mm's and the references to being great value by all I think your probably right!

Thank you.. I'll no doubt be asking for lots more advice soon, The s602 zoom will take a back seat, although having said that I won't forget that it was a good camera.

I'm already trying to think of places to get some nice pictures.. unfortunately being in moray I'm not surrounded by bright lights and city life but will see what I can find.
