Buying 35mm film in bulk

Can you not buy these as bulk reels, and then load into your own rolls?

Yep, I buy HP5 in 30metre rolls and load it into canisters myself, it usually works out at least a little cheaper. Some people complain of the loader scratching film and all but really I think that's more paranoia than anything else; I've been using it for over a year now with no problems at all. And it means you can decide on how many frames to use, I fin d that useful. Don't know much about buying 10+ rolls at a time though, only that well known auction site where people sell lots for a bit less than the shops.

Unfortunately Fuji don't market bulk rolls of their films in Europe, if you want them of either of those two films you would have to import it from the US or Japan. However Kodak, Ilford and Rollei do so you might want to have a look at their offerings.

This would be great - will research it and see how fiddly it is etc - having 12 shots a reel would due literally perfect for me!

Any good resources on exactly how to do it etc?

It's pretty simple really, just get the loader (cheapy cheapy from eBay and whatnot) and the film (expensive expensive from wherever. I usually go with eBay again), make sure you have a dark room (dark room, not darkroom) to get it into the loader and away you go. You'll be able to find more specific instructions depending on what you get and all. Just go for it!

OH, and look out for the felt things inside the loader (and on the opening thingy bits of canisters), if they're not there or are worn it could end up scratching your film. Saying that, the one I use is old and battered and doesn't have any felty bits at all. Still works absolutely fine.

Or have a look in the TP classifieds ;)
