Buy a Notebook ?

I was considering buying a cheapish notebook type computer so that I can watch DVD's, catchup on podcasts downloaded from the net, read PDF files etc etc on my commute and travels.

Is this a feasible option or will I really need a proper laptop

If you are looking something smallish,light & reliable to watch dvd's,surf etc
then i would recommend either the IBM T23 or T43.

They can be had cheap as chips from Fleabay at great prices.

Larger HDD can be found cheap & can be used either internally or externally
with a caddy which should set you back around £8

Extra Ram is getting cheaper too.

I had my old T23 for 4yrs before moving on to a T61.The t23 was 3yrs when
i brought it & only needed the cooling fan replacing at a cost of around £10

Thanks for the link - I was hoping to try and get away with something smaller if possible - a sort of a more versatile portable DVD player
 
I recently bought the Lenovo S10e Netbook purely for accessing email & the www and backing up my SDcards whilst travelling so didn't have high expectations...

suprisingly though it runs CS3 & Adobe Bridge reasonably well..it also plays .avi video easily (with the K-lite codec pack)

It comes with 1gb memory but it's easily upgraded to 2gb for around £15, has a 160GB hard-drive and loaded with XP

I highly recommend it...currently £250 at Dabs.com, cheaper than a decent portable storage device !!!

You can get external slim DVD drives, about the size of a couple of CD cases, for about £40-50. Depending on price, the netbook itself will either have a built in flash memory (probably 8 or 16GB) or a hard drive (probably 60-160GB) so you could copy your PDFs and stuff onto the laptop, and take the DVDs and drive with you if you want to watch a disc.
 
I just bought a samsung NC-10 for the same reasons. I tested it out on a short break in snowdonia last week and was realy pleased with my purchase. As i was away alone it was great to sit down in the evenings and view the shots that i took that day. It gave me chance to rename the good shots and dump the poor ones which then saved me a great deal of time back home. I ran Elements 6 and had no complaints, i could have done some manipulation but i chose to leave that for my larger screen back home.

I loaded software onto it by transfering it onto an SD card and then installing it from that, this worked fine. I'm not fussed about watching DVD's on it but with a 160gb HD they can easily loaded up at home for the trip.

I'm off to France and Romania later in the year and i know that the netbook will be a valuable part of my kit.
