Yes
so i know that the rumours are they will be bringing out a version of this with an image stabilizer. how do you think this will effect the price of the non IS when it does come out?

will it drop? i know it dropped recently on WEX.

what about the IS version, price guess? around £1200?

Have you any idea how long these rumours have been around for? If you want it, then get it now. You can spend too much of your life waiting for something that may never even come.

the new version will probably be near double the price of what it is now, i reckon.

i'd grab it now. if i had the cash that would be what i'd do.... photographers have used it without IS for years anyway. it might drop a few more quid, but then it's never going to be much more surely (i might have to burn the credit card it if does, it will be too tempting!)

I think the new one will be the thick end of £2k I'm afraid, at least to start with.

I also think this will mean values of the current model will remain pretty much unchanged, as seems to have happened with the 70-200 f/2.8 IS MkII. A new model will only really affect values of the current one if it sufficiently close in price. When the new one is double the price, it's in a totally different market segment really and few will be deliberating over which of them to buy.

it goes up to 20% on nearly everything, i'm afraid Chris. if you're gonna buy, buy it before jan!

Whilst the VAT rise makes a bit of difference, it's not huge - only another £21 on £1000.

See now I am trying to decide if I should go for the 24-70 or the 24-105. I want the IS of the 105 but the 2.8 of the 70 is so tempting!

I wouldn't wait. IF there is an IS version released soon it'll be MUCH more expensive and I wouldn't expect the price to rationalise for months.
It's a great lens as is. I can't see them selling any cheaper when/if the new model comes along.

Have a Nike moment....just do it !

I sell brand new Canon 24-70mm 2.8 lenses for £499 but I've non in stock just now.

That money would still be better in my pocket then some gready government's

Well yes, but you'll probably find that, a month or so into 2011, the kit would reduce in price by more than the increase in VAT. The point I was making was not to rush out and buy kit at the very end of this year if you don't have to, as you could find that it's even cheaper by, say Feb 2011 :)

admirable was joking saying it's all well and good having low prices but if they have none in stock then what's the point, it's just a scam.

Just rang park - none in stock

I think IS is definitely worth the money, I also think that the IS is being improved all the time - I have the 24 - 105 and 70 - 200 (F4) both have IS but on the longer lens the IS is much more obvious you can hear it working and see it working when you half depress the button.

Ok, just bit the bullet and ordered it from calumet for next day delivery £892 and in stock. Not bad.

Right guess I'll be putting my macro in the classified section!

I've had a couple of 24-105s and now have the 24-70. After a short learning curve I don't miss the IS at all and prefer the IQ from the 24-70

The 24-70 is heavy as it is, include a new bigger barrel design and the weight of the IS unit and it will be lens i will be liekly to use. Is it that hard to get 1/100s shot these days with the ISO performance of modern cameras?

No, but a shot you can get at 1/100th could be got at 1/10th with IS (stationary subject of course).

Good high-ISO performance and holding technique always helps, but when light is at a premium, IS is still worth having.

I still can't decide but I think I am heading towards a 24-105.

Why not try to buy a second hand one now and when the IS version comes out sell it and upgrade? Shouldn't loose too much money that way.

I took delivery of one today and i must say i totally underwhelmed

I'm struggling to see much if any IQ improvement from my Tamron 28-75mm ,

but it is a big lens and the hood is masive..........

Took delivery of 24-70 today, sure is a beast of a lens. feels like it means business! Looking forward to some target practice on it over the weekend.
