I had one for a few years (for birding not aircraft ) and sold it on to "pecrow" on here for the very use you allude to....maybe drop him a PM to see how he's getting on with it.
My own feeling is that 1srs bodies are too top heavy and the view finder a little too high for it but a smaller body is fine.

Hi Gaz - I considered one of these recently; having fallen too often into the category of buy something expensive/use it sporadically/sell it on I decided to break tradition and opted for a pistol grip which screws into the tripod foot of my lens (a Nikon 300mm f/2.8 in this case). Although I'd never trust the grip as a 'single point of holding the whole set-up' at any point, the comfort in your hand at what should be the lens' centre of gravity coupled with holding the camera body in the usual way makes quite a nice set up for me, which is usually 'in anger' against birds in flight. Anyway, maybe worth a punt for around £12 versus the cost of a Bushhawk!

Ive recently bought a bushhawk. I like handholding my 500 but after dislocating my shoulder Im finding it a bit harder to hold it for more than a couple of minutes now. Initial trials with it seem to be quite promising but I have modified mine to try and overcome what I see as the biggest problem with the bushhawk design.

i've used one for a couple of years now (thanks bob) for low level jets. i'm using a 7d with a 300mm f4 and find it balances well, a few others use 1 series with a 2.8.
it takes a while to get used to one but i find it helps a lot with tracking/framing. the only time i forgot it, i had a few chopped noses/tails so i think it works for me.
a disadvantage is that it takes your hand off the camera so its not easy to make setting changes quickly. also it doesnt work well with zooms.

Thanks for the info. The biggest issue I found with the MkIV and 500 on it was a slightly awkward head angle looking through the viewfinder. I have added a top plate to mine that angles the camera slightly and gives a more natural head position. Hopefully I will have a chance to try it this week at the Mach loop and find out how it feels.
