well ive come to the end for BIF with the 350d and bigma as the lens does'nt have a limit switch and the 350d only having 7 point if you dont nail the bird it comes all the way back then all the way front then you might get a arse shot. so do i need some sort of support is it the lens ,camera or me:bang: :bang: :bang: . ive only got a hand full of bif and i now i can get plenty more . the other day i left work as i was driving home the local kestral come over the field i stopped grabbed me camera zoomed to 300mm focus missed refocus to late . any :help: please

LOL. I take it BIF means 'Birds in flight'? :D

Having no focus limiter is a big handicap if the lens is going to hunt over it's whole range every time you lose the target. I rarely take hand held bird shots at all let alone birds in flight, but to work off a tripod with a really big lens on a tripod a gimbal head becomes an absolute necessity to have any chance of tracking the bird in the viewfinder and keeping it in the active AF spot(s) area. They're all horribly expensive with the exception of the Manfrotto 393 which is around a 100 quid.

As for changing camera and lens - it gets expensive from here on in depending which way you go. The Canon 1 Series cameras are leagues ahead in terms of speed and responsiveness of the AF system. You don't need me to tell you how it is when you start looking at very long Canon glass. ;)
 
thanks ct stationary birds 500mm weather it being tri/mono/hand ive got this done ok . it just me thinking if the lens had the limit switch it would help wright? some people say the 30d has a differant focus system, and some say the ef 400 f5,6 is a cracker for bif. would the 400 work ok with th 350d?

The 400mm 5.6 should work fine on the 350D. You would lose AF though with either converter (the 1.4X or the 2X)

I've shot birds in flight hand held no probs with the Canon 100-400L, but it just isn't long enough sometimes.
 
thats good news then. my vivitar tc works ok on the bigma only the outer focus points no central top and bottom . so it might work on the canon and give me 520mm but a slower af .?
 
If AF is such a problem couldn't you just manual focus?
 
thanks for the input manual focus is a no because the focus ring is to close the the camera and the balance is all over the place . if the ring was at the front it might work. at the moment im holding the foot and adjusting focus with my thumb and only then does it work.
