Nephew in Ellesmere, Penley area, Shropshire got burgled the other night 4.30am, the patio door was broken. Stupid dog made no noise. As well as the parents 2 young children upstairs, anything could have happened. I'm posting this in its own thread to remind folks it can happen to all of us. Extra lock on your patio doors, lock the windows. If possible leave an outside light on as the burglars hate to be seen. Advice from brother-in-law retired police officer.

patio doors are the easiest target especially old ones to be sure.

It's that time of year again, even burglars go christmas shopping.

Like what for instance? Something nasty you've read in the papers?
Most burglars will creep around so as not to be discovered, most are opportunistic thieves and won't want to be discovered. Unless they are specifically targetting cars and want the keys.

Still not nice thinking someone uninvited has been in your house.

I heard noises late at night from the house that was being refurbushed across the lane from us. Dashed out in my pants and trainers, grabbed a hefty rolling pin and went out on the prowl.

Found two blokes trying to nick the hot water cylinder, dropped it and legged it when I appeared and shouted at them, glad no one saw me in all my glory.

If you've ever been burgled you know it's a dreadful experience realising some person has been into what is supposed to be your safe place - your haven.

The feeling of violation lasts for ages

You tell me.

Something awful could have happened, but it didn't.
You can only take so many precautions, but if they're determined to get in, they will.
Nothing to be gained by living fearfully.
