Yes
Both with accidental cover.
"Family legal protection"
Personal possessions up to £5000

Whats a reasonable premium with a respectable company for buildings and contents cover? Ive been asked for £240 for a year.

2 bed bungalow worth about £250,000 in suburbia.

Thanks

I think that's roughly what I pay for my 3 bed semi in suburbia with similar limits through Directline.

yep about right although I just did via hastings direct premier with 16k worth of away from home cover on watches and jewels for £280 which was great.

Sound good to me with all that accidental included........AVIVA by any chance?

They slashed our premiums from 560 with Halifax to similar to yours...................

Stick an extra 0 onto personal possessions - imagine fire or a burglary and the house is emptied.

its not just jewellery, TV, computers etc you've also got the cost of all your clothes, furniture, decorations, white goods...

If you under value your contents the insurance company may not pay out anything

Personal possessions is just for items away from home(I think anyway), sorry I wasnt clear. i.e. my camera, lenses, scope and binoculars.
Contents cover is £100,000.

Direct line, renewal quote. Maybe I'll just let it auto renew then as it doesnt seem that bad from what people are saying.

Thanks all.

Premiums are all dependent on where you live for the same cover, so comparisons are only any good if they are local to you Keith.

...and you are right with the "Personal Possessions" bit.:)

Do direct line still require you to list "valuables" or "collections" worth more than £500?

I'll pay a lot extra to avoid that ...

Never go with direct lines renewal quote, it's always cheaper to get a fresh quote! They may say their throwing in all these extras because you're a valid customer, but go to their page and get a new customer quote (with all the same cover) and see what you get! They give 10% discount to all new customers!

From someone who pays over £700 for house/ contents insurance,, you've got it easy ;)

Yes they will. Will pay out pro-rata.

Just been on direct line. Filled in all my details for a new quote, except I deliberately mispelt my surname and put a birthdate in one month out(so their system would find it harder to check if I was already on it and dig out my quote I already had). Quote came up £195. that'll do thinks I.
Amended my details to the correct spelling of my surname and corrected the birthdate to be correct. Quote now £261.
What a load of b*****ks. Not impressed, they can get stuffed I think.

Go on a comparison site put in any made up name etc and see what quotes you get. Then phone Direct Line and tell them that due to lower quotes you will be insuring elsewhere. They will then "see what we can do for you" and re-quote.
All the companies do it so its not worth rejecting them just for that when renewing.

You want to base the buildings cover on the rebuild value of your house rather than what it is 'worth'. It does depend on the type of product that you are being offered though - some are bedroom rated and give a fixed amount of cover (as in up to a limit of £xxxx rebuild) and others are specifically rated on the sum insured you specify. Personal possessions is definitely cover away from the home - make sure you know what the single item limit is for that and also for valuables in the home and that it meets your needs.

More and more companies are moving to individual peril rating systems - so each peril is rated separately eg. theft, vandalism, fire, lightening, earthquake, flood, windstorm, subsidence etc etc in addition to the basic property / insured persons details. It is not really representative to compare your property with similar property's in different areas.
