Hi all,

I'm a newcomer to the exciting world of dSLR photography. I'm soon to get my first camera (a Fuji S3 Pro) and so am looking a which lens to pair with it.

For my first lens I think I'll go for one that has quite a large range and leave it on whilst I get used to the camera and photography in general. I'd like a focal length that starts low as I'm not THAT into telephotos for now.

I've been looking at the Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5 (£245 new, £165 used) and the Nikon 18-105mm f3.5-5.6 G ED AF-S VR DX (£199 new) or Nikon AF-S DX 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G (£180 - £220 new).

I think that, if the wallet allows, in future I'll get the Nikon AF-S 35mm f1.8 G DX for portraits and then some ultra-wides (when I know what I'm doing).

Any feedback, either experiences of those lenses, suggestions for alternatives or words of wisdom greatly appreciated

Thanks,

Darragh

I have a Nikon 18-70mm for sale here for £130 if you fancy it.

Other than that I can highly reccommend the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 - there's one for sale here

The Nikon really is a class lens that is a great all-rounder. However, despite the shorter zoom range, the Tamron is great because of the constant f/2.8 aperture; the later has taken over from my 18-70mm, hence why i'm selling it.

I own a 18-70 nikon Dx and for the money it is a fantastic lens. Especially if you can get it for £220 new!!! Very good image quality. Also if you want an inexpensive prime. The 50mm f1.8 nikon is a great buy.

I had an S3 and used it mostly with a Sigma 18-50 2.8, the pair combined was superbly sharp and worked really well.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Being impatient and with NO lenses I've gone ahead and ordered the 18-70 for new for £180 via a seller on Amazon. Thanks specialman and I'm sure you've looked after yours, but for the extra I've gone for new.

I've looked at 50mm primes but with the crop factor I think I prefer the 35mm field of view. But that's for another (pay)day

No worries matey - that's a good price for a new lens. You'll love it - shot tonnes of stuff with mine and it whupped lenses twice the price in terms of IQ :)
