Hoping to start out as a full blown tog over the next few months, one of the things I need to do is get a website up and running. I have purchased a domain name but need help with the rest.

Where do you start, basically I want somewhere I can show my portfolio have a client area and a blog would be nice too...

What did you guys do?? Can this be done myself or am I best calling in the pros?? I don't want something ultra fancy just simple but classy.

Any help/links/advice would be fantastic

My partner built my website when I started out professionally earlier this year. We bought the domain from fasthosts which was £11 for the year I believe. Used Yola as a host and when you need to put photos on for clients to view he used smugmug. Its still in basic form but it does the job for now and did not cost lots of money which is good.

Good Luck :)

Looking at site design myself..

What is your domain name ?

If you have access to a mac there is a program called iweb which is great for setting up a very quick, clean and simple web site.

I did this one for my taekwondo club in a few hours.

www.huddersfieldtaekwondoclub.org

You can add picture gallaries from iphoto and link i videos and maps all by just dragging on objects in the program.

May not be totally pro but easy and much cheapness...!!!

shifted into computers for you :)

There's a great sticky post at the top of the Computers etc forum, have a read on there.

Personally I'm experimenting with Photoshelter at the moment and am going to move my site over to there in the next few weeks.

...If you don't want to start your own from scratch then you could try buying a template from http://www.templateheaven.com/ for example (some nice photography ones on there) and amending it to suit you. Various prices / themes etc.

its not too hard to learn how to code/adapt a blog to look good or to code a simple website.

If this is going to be your living then get a proper web designer to do this for you. You can do your own, but you will never get the look you will from a custom designed site.

Might cost you a little, but they can do things like client galleries etc. and will save you time to focus on the other things you will need to do.

You can do it yourself and learn but your clients will be your test subjects as to whether it works or not. Just imagine the big shoot, and the client can't access due to browser incompatibility. Not the professional image you are trying to project.

If you want to learn web design do it, not saying that, but to do it well you need a lot of learning, usually via mistakes. So have little projects rather than your on site.

Plenty of good and not too expensive people out there.

I wouldn't recommend anything other than Photium. Nice easy templates, payments handled for you and support is immense, usually get a response within ten minutes, and that includes late on a Saturday night! You can also have password protected areas for your clients.

One day I'll get mine professionally revamped but until then, Photium does everything I need it to.

im looking at "into the darkroom " web template with blog link etc. the dream package is nice, a bit pricey though but they do have special offers on so il wait for a discount. im using zenfolio at the moment but i need large image viewing and the blog link is important for google searches.

I bought my domain name for £1.99 a year and just use iweb from my mac to do my site. Its very easy and I'm very happy with it.
