My boy needs to use a pc more and more now so im going to rebuild my old one that I had, ive got a 230gb drive for it(robbed out of old backup unit that died) but obviously the drive has no OS on it, how is best to go about getting it all set up? Ive got a cd drive in so im guessing just run cd and format new drive/install? at the moment its telling me boot manager is missing so i guess a bit of bios tweaking to get to boot from CD?

To be honest you may struggle with a cd drive im sure windows is on a dvd, if you are looking for a new motherboard, cpu, ram etc have a look at www.aria.co.uk they sell bundles, they are very well priced.

i loaded my windows 7 via a usb stick.

Yea, if you have a windows disc it is just a matter of firing it in and following the on screen instructions.

If it wont boot from the disc then you are correct, press 'del' or F1 to enter the bios and then search for something along the lines of 'boot priority', make the CD drive top and you are sorted. (oh and dont change anything in the bios if you dont know what it does, but dont worry either as changes are only applied when you save and restart, so you can just discard changes you didn't intend)

You can buy a new Dvd drive for about £16 They are cheep as chips nowadays

Even in PC World I've seen DVD Burners as cheap as £20. Online as low as Toonie said. Go on, treat your kid. ;)

I had an original vista dvd and XP cd, whilst ferreting about for those i found a DVD drive so vista it is. Needs a stick of 1gb DDR 3200 to give it a bit of go, but otherwise its all good. Sempron processor and a Dell LCD so its ok, works well enough, just need more memory. I used to run PS on this machine back in the days before the wife hijacked my mac..
