I am not a great wide angle lens user and at present just have the Canon 18-55 that came with the camera, used carefully the results are ok but I am looking for something just a touch better with a similar zoom range.

I notice that the Canon 18-55 IS is supposed to be appreciably better than the non IS version so I would be grateful for the views of users, the other lens I am considering is the Sigma 17-35 f2.8/4 ,budget is £150 max

Agreed - but its not f/2.8 - its f/2.8 - f/4.5

Its only f/2.8 at 17mm.

You should be able to get a Sigma 18-50f/2.8 Ex for about that figure--terrific value for money.Perhaps not quite as good as the Tamron but vastly better than the kit lenses and constant f/2.8.
Pete.

Where from? I'm after one but the Sigma and Tamron both go for about £250+

Canon 18-55IS is great value -about £80 S/H, very good image quality, for a technical review go to www.photozone.de.
I bought one and it's great, small, light and an excellent replacement for the kit lens.
