Hi guys and gals

I am sorry if this has been done to death but I could not find threads with advice specific to nature photography. I am the lucky position where I spend a lot of time in some astonishing scenery with an abundance of wildlife and would love to start taking some decent photos of some of it. However I am a poor student so realy have a maximum budget of about £600 although I could stretch a little further if it was a convincing enough argument.

I am looking for a lens which will enable me to take photos of wildlife in the Brecon beacons as well as some days with the local fox hunt/pheasant shoot.

I already have a 55-200mm which I really like, but was looking for something with a bit more reach for the wildlife.

My research has turned up this lens, Sigma 120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 DG OS HSM (Canon Mount). At £560 I thought it looked a good deal but wanted some opinion on it first, also are there any alternatives worth looking at?

Cheers in advance Dan.

Oh yeah I shoot with a Canon 40d and very much a novice.

Sigma do canny lenses, perhaps a second hand 50-500mm or 170-500mm could fit the bill. Should be in your price range.

Cheers for the replies, is ebay the place to look for the secondhand lenses?

Dont forget TP sales and wanted sections, im sure others will comment about Ebay.

I have this lens and am very pleased with it, it is not to heavy.

Just bought what looks like a brand new Sigma 150-500mm from the classified section of this forum for £545 delivered RMSD.

I was a bit wary of the Sigma lenses after reading some of the posts about QC and image sharpness, but after getting some advice from people like Scott I went ahead and bought one. Really pleased with it in the limited time I've had to play with it.

I'd agree with getting one with OS on it, and even then I've still bought a monopod to go with it. Still came in under £600 tho.

I think that I am pretty settled on the 150-500mm then. Hopefully will help me improve enough that when I can finally afford some really nice lenses my pics will be up to their standards.

Cheers everyone.

Also how many posts before I can access classifieds? Wont let me in at the moment.

try a 2nd hand Sigma 150-500mm f6.3 a cracking Nature lens

Ive just bought a brand new one :D

Cheers for all the advice guys, got a hard choice to make now. New small river fly fishing rod (just broke mine) or the wildlife lens........... think the lens is edging it at the moment.

good luck!
the sigma lenses have a great reputation normally vs price
don't forget with some cameras you have a crop factor to include in your calculation of reach
for wildlife, have a look around for a monopod/tripod
or even a beanbag
I look forward to seeing your photos on here :)

Just as a final note there is currently a Sigma 150-500mm for sale £600 on the site I mentioned a few posts earlier.
