Budget canon fit portrait lens

Im looking to get into portrait photography im planing on buying a flash and a stand a umbrela next week but my main concern is i only have the 18-55 kit lens and a nifty fifty.

My question is what lens can i get for around £200 that would be good for portrait photography i hear alot of people saying 85mm -100mm is a good focal length for portrait but what zoom lens would be my best buy?

Nifty fifty, 85 1.8....they are the best 2 budget portrait lenses, but if you were to go for a zoom, perhaps a 24 - 70 2.8?? I have the Sigma version and have used it in the studio with good results :) - Can be had for around £230 I think!
 
was looking at the 24 - 70 2.8 sigma what do you think is the 85mm 1.8 beter than the sigma 24 - 70 2.8? il be shooting on location nearly all the time.
 
Probably the Sigma then, it'll give you a lot more flexibility and if you're using flash then the 1.8 - 2.8 gap won't affect you too much
 
what about the 85mm hype over focal length for portrait shots is this realy a big deal?
 
The 85mm will become effectively 1.6x (135mm?) on a crop camera which will only be good for head and shoulder shots if you are on location (guessing people's homes?), the 50mm on a 1.6x is a good length :)
 
i think i understand most my shots will be outside ***. i think il get the sigma this will give me more control and i can still use the 50mm for the sharper shots.

how dose the sigma compare to the 50mm in sharpness?
