Hi all,

Can anyone recommend a Blue Ray player about £130.00 ish as times are hard ....

I want to upgrade now my DVD player has died. I have a 720p TV so not that worried, but I read Blue Ray is where it is at and I like renting the odd movie. I dont play video games so PS3 is a no go for me.

Are Blue Ray much of a muchness about that price and more to the point will I see a better image than standard def ?

Thanks in advance,

Richer Sounds have at least 10 'proper' brands with Blu Ray players at less than your budgeted amount - I'd check out what they've got, and see which comes out best in terms of reviews online???

You can get very good sony ones for that kind of money from amazon. They are nice units and do everything you need. Have a look on there.

You wont be disappointed.

They upscale all your dvds, so they will look much better but blus are very nice on a good tv. 720p is alright on a tv that is on the smaller size, anything up to 37" and you will be hard pushed to tell the difference.

Get a nice HDMI cable and you will be laughing, also remember as a lot of people dont realise this, but HD is just not about the picture as most people seem to think. Its also the HD sound, which is a great deal better than what you get on a dvd, but you will need an amp that is compatible with these sounds systems to take advantage of it i.e. HD Master Audio, DTS HD. That could be something to upgrade to in the future.

If you want a really nice picture then go for one, and you will find what you need in amazon. Cheaper than most places that you will find.

Let us know what you do. Id probably go for the last one here for the money, but have a look and see what you think.

Surely any old HDMI cable will do??? There is little or no difference between a 50p one, and a £50 as it's optical cable.

Cheers all. Appreciate the replies.

The legacy of my life is before my divorce I had a cinema room with Denon 2900 and Denon amp with 7.1 surround and high end kit including a Sim 2 DLP projector, but I don't watch films like I used too, I spend more time outside but reckon a decent budget blue ray player would be cool.

Will check out those links, I have been out of the AV game for a long time.

Regards.

Well thats open to debate, and to be honest, I think you would be a bit silly to spend several hundred if not the best part of a £1000 on equipment to then fire the signal through a 50p HDMI cable. Im not suggesting he spends £50 on a cable, but Im sure there is no harm in spending a tenner on a nicely made cable, and something that will probably last longer than a 50p one.

Thats the first time Ive ever heard that a HDMI cable is optical, and optical cable is optical, HDMI is wired.

Quote from AV forum -

HDMI is basically a digital version of RGB analog video; the main signal is carried on four shielded twisted pairs: one for red, one for blue and one for green. On a single cable, HDMI can support any TV or PC video format, including standard, enhanced and high-definition video. It can also support up to eight channels of digital audio and the Consumer Electronics Control signal. An HDMI cable is made of four shielded twisted pairs of wires that carry the color, sync and clock signals. These wires, which represent signals, are balanced in twisted pairs.

Their HDMI is well rated is 5 star in what hifi, and also only a fiver delivered. I just bought another tonight in fact.

In reality though HDMI delivers binary code, so the quality of cable does not make much difference. It is a digital signal, it will either get there or not, whether that be on a £100 cable or a £1, but in terms of build quality worth a fiver.

I agree, thats what Im saying, its worth spending a few quid on something to connect up nice equipment, I never mentioned spending more than need be.

Dont understand why someone asks a normal question, it gets answered, but then it goes on for ages more with people arguing with each other over the most trivial things.

The subject was about a budget blu ray player, that was dealt with. Now its being debated about whether cables are any different from each other. Start another thread if you want to discuss other subjects.

If you have access to a costco or you can still find one in Argos the Toshiba BDX2000 is the one to go for.

The picture quality is outstanding but I do have a 1080P set

The reason it's the one to go for is it was £300 but argos and costco are selling it for £99, inside the box is an offer for 12 months bluray lovefilm subscription worth £96, it's the 4 discs a month one but you have to activate it online within 7 days then post the receipt off to them

make sure the HDMI cable that you get is HDMI v1.3 or v1.4 (the cheap one from tescos i bought was not and it would not carry 1080p signals - only 720p, apart from that any cable will do. i bought mine from 7 day shop.

I bought the sonyBDP360 from richer sounds at christmas, its a cracking player, i believe that its now been superceeded by the 370

Like Whitewash i also got the Sony 360 from richer sounds i'm more then happy with it. I got one because my dvd player broke and the sony was not that much more money then buying another dvd.

I've actually seen a Samsung one going for £47 in Curry's. Yes, 47 quid, although it is an end of the line product, but a Blu Ray player for under fifty of the queen's head you can't knock it.
Mind you, it does have a major design flaw, the thing's quite enlongated and the disc loading bay is on the side - which means it's completely useless when placed in a cabinet!

i use those cables. and yes, you can use bell wire if you really wanted. as its a digital signal it'll either work or not.
