Yes
Anybody seen the news that BT have new products coming out on December 9th? New products for Wholesale so many other ISP's will be able to offer the services too!

Just waiting on confirmed pricing..

Sounds great, wonder what the costings will be and actually, probably more interesting, the upload speeds. Could Cloud backup finally be a speedy reality? :)

Do you have a link to said news also?

My download is fast enough, but the upload is tempting!!

Upload is what I want. Virgin cable is awful for uploads as they throttle it so heavily.

I'm due for an upgrade with sky in a couple of months, so will be having a good look round. Currently, just have the basic internet but it does seem fine - it is happy streaming Netflix, now tv while browsing the web etc.

It'll be interesting to see how well the infrastructure holds out with these new speeds.

Some areas are redicoulously oversubscribed already. Without the backbone investment this new speed era is going to be very lacklustre.

They've proven 40Gbps is possible too in an effort to future-proof the infrastructure, here's hoping it doesn't all come crashing down!

And as for Virgin, well we don't get such offerings in Cornwall, seems like certain tech doesn't like to travel across the Tamar lol

Have you looked at the vivid gamer 200? Think that's unthrottled 20 up?

.

I'm already on Vivid 200. That's the issue. It's throttled after about 2GB of upload so you can't do new back ups in a sensible amount of time at all. Sometimes it is just a struggle to things uploaded to flickr or backed up to smugmug because the throttling is so aggressive and the allowances so pathetically small.

I was already considering moving to BT fibre just to get unlimited upload even though download would probably be about 40mbit so about a quarter of the VM speed.

This is exactly what I mean, there are areas in the UK where even 8 meg Internet is hard to get. I'd rather they invest in the core infrastructure across the entire UK rather than push to get ridiculous speeds in city centers.

Ah I thought it was unthrottled.. :(

I get 10 up on mine but admittedly I only ever push smallish jpg up to my site.

I would echo what Neil says, I would rather they roll out a decent speed of fibre or just internet to EVERYONE! I would like the minimum amount to be 20 meg. That should be more than fast enough for most. I find it appalling that in 2016, nearly 2017, some people still can't get access to at least 8 meg broadband.

I seems to take a while for decent upgraded speeds to reach where I live, but I guess I am one of the lucky ones who can get a full fat 80/20 on BT fibre. Bit for a long time, the most i could get was 512kb, then 2mb, then 8mb, eventually getting 20mb before they upgraded my area to fibre. I seemed to take an absolute age.

The government did set a minimum standard a few years ago but it was something pathetic like 2MB. It needs to be at least HD streaming more than one stream sort of speed to be any good.

Yep agree, in todays day and age, 2mb is crap, I reckon min of 8 or 10 mb would be a far better target for them to aim for.

I read an article by an ex BT engineer explaining why our infrastructure is so poor compared to some other parts of the world. Apparently it was the Thatcher government who didn't like what BT were proposing back then and so prevented them from improving the underlying wiring. They considered that BT would then be a monopoly, which wasn't "fair". If this is the case, then no wonder our country is falling behind.

I'm on a cable service and currently get 200 down and 12 up. I think I'd like to see a bit more up from my provider.

BT said they would upgrade the infrastructure and put coax in (like Virgin "fibre" uses) if the government would give them exclusive rights to it, so no other carriers could use it, ergo no LLU, no competition. The result of this would have been the same choice of ISP that those using a VM line get, just the infrastructure provider themselves.

Agreed.

A few years ago BT announced Infinity was coming to our area. At one point they even gave an estimated date. I took that with a pinch of salt but thought we would get it eventually but now BT are saying - " We're working with government and industry to explore ways to bring Superfast fibre to as many people as possible but don't have a plan for your area yet"

I wouldn't mind if we lived miles from anywhere but we are about 7 miles from central London.
