Had this for some time .....tbh I wouldn't like to try and guess when it began.

As it is, the laptop takes numerous attempts for it to boot and when it does, it isn't very long before all freezes and the inevitable BSOD returns.

Extremely frustrating, the only consolation being that I have the desktop to work from.

I did look online at possible reasons and solutions....seems it could well be a driver problem of some sort if I understand correctly.

The methods that I read for sorting the problem out all came across as being beyond my computer knowledge/abilities.

If anyone can help me to get the darned thing up and running properly again, then i would be extremely grateful....please bear in mind that i am not overly literate with computers so simplicity is the key word.

Hi Neil,

What chance was there for the laptop to boot when I wanted the blue screen error message to appear.....sods law! lol

I know from other times it has stated ........ Driver IRQL not less or equal

As for any other file references, I'd have to get the BSOD to come up again ...do you suggest I try rebooting again now or try something else whilst i have it up and runing?

i would take a look on the HP support page, download and run through all of the driver packages for your version of vista.

do you let windows update download drivers by any chance?

OK I'll take a look

do you let windows update download drivers by any chance?

I wouldn't be 100% sure if I'm honest ....I've always allowed the windows updates to automatically download as and when they've come through.....I've never changed the default settings regarding that so presumably the answer to your question will be "Yes".

Is that where the problem may have come from?

i would always trust manufacturer drivers over MS (unless you have no other choice for legacy hardware)

OK I'm having a look through HP support atm .....I'll let you know wether I have any luck or not in finding a solution.

Btw I think comps are ace ......when they work!!! lol

To update on this thread:

I've got the laptop up and running again but after trying different avenues, i found the only way was to re install vista from the recovery partition on the hard drive and of course re install security and other progams along with backed up files.

A long process but at least i've got the computer back!
