Hello again everyone. Decided I had to give it another go as I'm sick of being helpless :D

I had Post and Metal ready for upload and then saw this week's theme :dummy::dummy: and thought 'b****r', but I'm going to give it a go anyway.

So here are

POST

Hope you like them, and I'll catch up with you all soon.

Hi Jill - sorry you have not been well but great to see you back and on form!

Post - what a handsome building - much classier than anything around here! Nice colours and contrasting lights and darks but it could do with straightening, if poss.

Metal - lovely! I don't know what it is but it is a fantastic image, with the angle and curves of the converging "fins" brought out by the lighting. Lovely warm colours, too. Is it the base of a fancy lamp post? Whatever it is, well spotted.

:clap::clap:

Welcome back Jill, sorry to hear you've been really ill.. How did you exhibition turn out in the end...

Post, I really like that, it's an excellent image. Lovely details, sharp as a sharp thing and the contrasts work so well.

Metal, I've no clue what it is either, but it really works well. The colour is great, and the details in the textures of the welds stand out nicely. The angle is really good.

It's a so and so of a theme this week... I'm sure you remember it from last year... good luck..

I certainly do remember :cuckoo:, not a great week to rejoin methinks but I have managed to get a needle and syringe from the docs so all I have to do now is peruse how I'm going to use it, although, at the moment, sticking it in my eyeballs seems preferable

Great to hear from you John, and it's good to be back

Really nice warm colours in both of these Jill.

The building is lovely and very photogenic

I wasn't sure sure what the metal object was until I read your post but it is a cracking abstract image. Well done on your return.

Hi Jill - and a great big 'Welcome back' from me, too  I hope it signals an improvement in your health. :)

You do chose your moments to rejoin though - right in the middle of a run of 'difficult' themes. ('Difficult' is what I call the ones where inspiration totally fails me.)

I can't add much to what Tracer, John and Andy have said, except that as always, your work is a pleasure to see.

I can't imagine what you've got in mind for your props for Grunge, Jill.:eek::eek: :)

I'm currently a week behind and struggling. :gag:

Jean

Another huge welcome back from me too!

I really hope you're starting to turn the corner with your health problems, you've been missed around here.
(Although as Jean said, you could have picked a better time to join back in. The last few themes have been :gag: . . . and then we get grunge again)

Metal is a beautiful abstract image. I could see this printed up large on canvas. The play of light and shadow on it works brilliantly.

And post, as has been said, is such an elegant building and you've brought out the best in it.
 Not sure about straightening. The horizontals look spot on, but the verticals do seem a bit wonky.

I'm looking forward to seeing you come up with something for grunge

Good to see you back Jill. I enjoy your Spanish pics as life is depicted out here in this strange ol' place!! Hope that you are back in fighting shape.

Best wishes.

Great to see you back, Jill. I always enjoy your photos and these two are no exception. I really love your metal shot and would never have guessed what it was. The colours and leading lines are excellent.

Hope you are feeling much better and look forward to seeing your grunge!

Jenny

Thanks for all your great welcome back :D

And your positive comments of course ;)

And I hope my interpretation of Grunge doesn't disappoint as you've given it such a great build up.

GRUNGE

And I hope my interpretation of Grunge doesn't disappoint as you've given it such a great build up.

Definitely not disappointed.
Obviously a lot of thought went into setting this up and the B&W suits it well. If I had one criticism it would be that it's a little too perfect. Maybe some noise or grain would have added something to it.

Beginnings certainly fits the theme, but I'm struggling to work out what it is. Obviously it's a letter A, but I feel like I want some more context with it. Is it a page in a book, or a letter on some packaging, or something else completely?
Being kept guessing isn't a bad thing, but in this case I'd have liked a wider angle to give me at least a hint :)

Jill, your grunge shot is excellent. Dark shot of a dark subject. The B/W is just right.

I agree with Sarah about wanting to know what your A is. It looks like a ceramic tile. Very appropriate for the theme and I love the colours. It is a rather intriguing shot.

Jenny

This is a wider shot of Beginnings for Sarah and Jenny :D

4765037159_456d629de7.jpg

And glad you both like grunge. I knew having all those injections would have a positive side

I was using manual and forgot I could have whacked up the ISO as well Sarah :(

Bit of a catch up from me, Jill. :)

Grunge: Oooo - this looks scary. Grungey realism. Photographically, I love it, although the subject matter is so dark. The mono treatment adds to the atmosphere - a good interpretation of our least favourite theme.

Beginning: What an artistic A. :) It never occurred to me it might be a tile - I thought you had drawn it and then taken the pic. :) It made me think of a child's alphabet book and gets full marks from me for clever interpretation. Just thinking - you could use it for Art, too. ;) :)

Jean

:agree: grungey realism if ever there was any, although I think the content is not what's implied in the image. Excellent shot, and the B&W makes it even better.

I thought you'd found some artistic graffiti somewhere, but it's a great idea for Beginnings and much better than my first thought of using the A from scrabble, although that has 2 of them. Lovely shot of it too, good colours and the textures stand out well.

Top marks for Grunge - I hope this is a set-up model and not a real druggie! It is the best interpretation I have seen. Perhaps you could just dodge the face a tiny amount?

Beginnings - I have been wondering what this is. Your original image is very striking with lovely colours and textures but I think I prefer the wider version which I find even more attractive.

:clap::clap:

Liking all the shots jill, but especially grunge! That's a wicked shot, and what a way to stick it to such an awful theme!! Nicely done!

Beginnings... how did I not think of this! Excellent interpretation

Thanks Jean - I remember doing a scary Identity shot last year that got a strong reaction too. As for Beginnings I just took the easiest option as it's part of the name of our house :D

:agree: grungey realism if ever there was any, although I think the content is not what's implied in the image. Not sure what you mean by this John. Can you explain further? Excellent shot, and the B&W makes it even better. Thanks :D

You're very kind

Hi KG, nice to see you again (especially as you are liking the shots ) and that was as grungy as I could think of.

Beginnings... how did I not think of this! Excellent interpretation

I really like what you have done for your grunge shot, i agree with Sarah i think it would benefit from a bit of film grain to give it even more of an edge.

Thanks for looking

ART

4783727434_eb79be9b39_b.jpg

This is part of a shop façade which I thought made for a great abstract picture.

So I guess you could call it Art

It certainly looks like art to me
(although it could almost double up as another abstract A for beginnings.)

This is up there with my favourite shots from you Jill. Beautiful colours and tones. I love the way that the light is catching it and you've framed it really well to make the most of the lines and angles.
10 out of 10 from me this week. I love it !

And thank you for the wider shot of beginnings.
I definitely prefer it with the borders in frame.

In the last 2 weeks, you've really demonstrated how the simplest things can make really interesting images. It's inspired me to look at every day objects a bit more closely in future.

This is lovely, Jill, with its interesting shapes and colours - well spotted. It would make a great canvas for the wall.

I do like that abstract Jill, it has great colours in it and is exposed very well  I like your A too, good ol' spanish ceramics - Hate to say it, but picked up straight away what it was from :)

Grunge - Made me cringe, i could feel the needle. but good image and fitted the theme.

I do like the Art/abstract, and have to agree it could pass as the A in beginnings, i scrolled back up as i thought it was based on that.

thumbs up from Me.

i like the abstractness (if thats a word) of it, nice colours as well.

Thank you so much Sarah, and 10 out of 10

Thanks Tracer. I don't know about a canvas but I'm certainly going to print and frame it, especially as my A3 printer arrived today :D

Jajajaja, the tiles are as common as muck in Spain aren't they. Glad you like the abstract.

Grunge - Made me cringe, i could feel the needle. but good image and fitted the theme. It met the brief then

Thanks David, I appreciate it.

Thanks KK, and thanks for looking.

Jill, your grunge image made for uncomfortable viewing, that is subject-wise not photographically. A strong image, bang on theme.

I like both your beginnings and art images, the abstract feeling to both of them works well. Bright colours really appeal to me and both images are well lit too. Oh welcome back :) Iain

I find it irritating when I can't offer constructive criticism on how a shot can be improved, but unfortunately I like your abstract for art exactly as it is.

Phil

Thanks everyone for your comments :D

Here is my take on Relaxation ......

RELAXATION

4804756960_780eea6a07_b.jpg
:)

A typical day at the beach for a Spanish family

I am so envious - we have had almost solid rain for a week here. :bang:

The colours are lovely and it definitely says relaxation. However I don't really like the tyre tracks in the foreground which seem to create a barrier to the eye - I think it would be better if you cropped out the loose sand at the bottom so that there wasn't such an obvious contrast in texture. Or you could even clone out the worst of the tracks.... Just a suggestion.

try cropping out the tyre tracks. gives it more of a pano feel.

Thanks for the comments - not my best week I know :(

Here's a pano crop .......

4812245223_815a0bfb81_b.jpg

The horizon is level (honest guv) but the sand curves around a bay so doesn't look straight.

and this was my second choice .......

4812876166_063ec16ae4_b.jpg

I prefer your first one for relaxation Jill. The rule of thirds works really well here. I especially like the vibrant colours, it definately says relaxation. Well done, I am envious of your subject choice. :)

:plusone: The colours and composition make the first image really easy on the eye, I like it! I think it could have been stronger still without the bunch on the right hand side & perhaps with a slightly shallower dof.

Phil

Sorry Jill, I can't remember why I thought that now...

Art, excellent, strong bold colours, and very abstract.

Relaxation, the crop works very well... they look like they are relaxing nicely.

I really like the combination of different colours in your 1st image for relaxation. Although I don't like the tyre tracks, I think the pano ruins the image so I'll live with the tyre tracks and say No 1 is my fav.
