A lot of the time, when looking through the WLF of my SQ-A, the bottom half of the circle is black rendering it useless and hard to get accurate focus. Using 80mm 2.8.

I'm wondering why this happens so I can hopefully avoid it!
 
Is that circle part of a split screen for focus? If so I think you have to look at it dead square for it to be clear and when part goes black it means you're looking at it from a slight angle.

Not used a bronica though so I can't say for sure!
 
Wot Carl said. Move your head around a bit until it's clear, you'll soon get the hang of it.
 
With my old Nikkor 105 f4 you have to have your eye in exactly the right place to avoid the dark side of the circle.

It can be a bit of a pain at times.

Don't feel too silly about it....the first time i experienced this issue, my heart sank believing my lens was stuffed!

I personally find the split image circle distracting most of the time and prefer to just use the matte surface surrounding it for focusing. Whenever it looks sharp, I trip the shutter. Now, if only I could track down an all-matte SQ focusing screen...

At any rate, the more you use the camera, you'll find that you develop your own techniques for achieving focus. Whether scale focusing, pre-focusing, using the split-image, etc.
