Yes
This was semi-stand developed in Rodinal 1:100 - six inversions to start, six inversions after 30 minutes. I've exaggerated the PP to show up the issue.

So - too much agitation, not enough agitation, too weak agitation, or too powerful agitation, do you reckon?

Looks like you agitated too fast. I was taught by a printer called Les McLean to take long slow sweeping arcs and to give a 1/4 rotation as I turned. The Blacks also look a bit grey so maybe a slightly longer development time.

Exactly what I had with Tri-x stand developed in Rodinal. According to the Kodak data sheet for Tri-x you need to be more vigorous with the agitation to ensure the bromide/halation/wotsit layer is removed and that avoids the banding issue. I linked the data sheet in this post when looking for a solution.

Cheers both - I guess I'll have to experiment! I was careful with the inversions, so next time I'll try a bit more shaking, see if it's better.

Here's the straight-out-of-scanner shot - it's deffo underexposed, no way Rollei Retro 400s is actually 400, and I also managed to expose for the sky instead of the shadowed bits I was interested in. Cock up all round, really, but it was the shot that showed the streaks up the best.

I've had this streaking with different films and found it wasn't to do with agitation although increasing the amount of developer solution seems to have resolved issue.

Firstly we all know that too much agitation increases grain, so unless yo want that effect, then best to agitate for a half minute then 3 gentle inversions at the half hour mark when semi stand developing.

As for the streaks.

I'm presuming it was a 35mm film and you mixed a solution of about 300ml ??

Try increasing the amount of solution to as much as double that ....will still only require 6ml of rodinal at that solution.....This is how I overcame the streaks!

I now always ensure there is a min of 600ml solution for 35mm film semi stand deving and not had issues with streaks since.

Ironcally i haven't had the same problem with 120 film which i've used 600ml as a standard quantity of solution so although the actual concentrate of the solution always remains the same at 1:100, the actual quantity of concentrate developer within the solution is different .
How and why this has made a difference I have no idea except the fact that there is more chemical for the emulsion to react with.

b****r! Thanks Asha, I think you've solved it. I just realised I put in 500ml (5ml of developer) for two films when it should have been 600ml. So, not enough fluid *and* not enough R09. Next time I'll do 600ml of fluid with 6-8ml of R09.

Cheers all!

If you do 2 x 35mm films together then i would suggest 800ml solution to ensure enough liquid and "strength" ( 8ml developer / 800ml water)

You would likely get away with 600ml but for the sake of 2ml extra chemical you can be sure the soup is sufficient

Just for future reference, you can't get Bromide drag with Rodinal. There is no Bromide in it to drag.
The streaking like this is either due to excessive or insufficient agitation (really helpful I know).
